Spoilers Star Trek: Picard 1x04 - "Absolute Candor"

[Bad Thoughts]

This one seemed stitched together. I liked most of the scenes individually, but I did not think they made a coherent whole.

Loved:

• The deeper dive into Romulan culture
• Killer Romulan Nuns!
• Picard having to be put on the defensive: this was fine acting on Stewart's part, balancing regret and surrender
• Sliding through the dry ice room on the Cube was perhaps the first time I thought there was legitimate attraction between Soji and Narek
• Stomping on the "Romulans only" sign was kinda bad-ass
• Camerawork: much more dynamic, much more appropriate for a slower, acting centered series.

Hated:

• Data-dumping Picard: Stewart was never good at giving long lists of details, something that previous scripts took advantage of. Given his age, he is no better at it.
• Jurati always following behind people by a few steps. Writers, please give her something to do!

But, a woman being openly sexual in Star Trek means you must be nothing short of a temptress if not thoroughly evil. Some things (in Star Trek) never change.

Well she did choke her brother and promised pain if he does not get results in a week's time. I don't think she is part of good guys group.

BTW, what is wrong with you. It is just a light hearted statement. Why over analysis it ?

Some good character moments in this one, but, boy, I’m getting worn out on the introductions. Not only do they spend this episode introducing Romulan Legolas (whom I liked), but the cliffhanger is the arrival of yet another character. Halfway mark next week and we’re still in place-setting mode.

I enjoyed the Romulan cultural insights, though binding only to lost causes seems like a rather unsustainable way to run a guild.

Didn’t enjoy the Tilley-esque portrayal of Jurati early on. One Tilley is enough, thanks.

Loved the old-school Romulan warbird.

My least favorite episode of the season so far. Was looking forward to Freecloud but it was mostly about adding a swordsman to the quest. Hope he can use a phaser too.

Stewart doesnt have the energy of even Bernie Sanders (about his age). He is a walking, talking fossil who slows every scene to a crawl and puts any audience to sleep. If he had HALF the energy of nearly 90 yo Shatner, this would be better. Instead we get a retirement home Bingo champ to put us to sleep as he slowly works up the energy to walk in a straight line, let alone make anything happen. Sad to see him so physically limp and flaccid. Give him some pep pills or viagra or something to wake this man UP.

Let's bring Vash or Anij to guest-star next season. That would've certainly wake him UP .

...Are they flying the Sirena down to the city? Or is that some sort of a shuttle? Fewer glowing bits there than in the hero ship in previous shots, it seems.

This doesn't bother me whatsoever. The series is designed around the character's, as well as the actor's, aging. It is poignant to see him struggle to accomplish the tasks he has set forth. Could it be different? Yes, they could use lots of cuts and extensive editing to make Stewart look more vibrant. I don't think they should.

People keep complaining about the pace of this series. Did they not pay attention months ago when the producers said the series would be slower-paced?

I also don’t get the complaints about Picard himself. Until the mostly reviled TNG films, he wasn’t much of an action star anyway. So I don’t get the issues. He’s playing a man potentially at the end of his life on one last mission. I’m not expecting him to do a decathlon here.

I liked the world-building in this one. It is really nice to get some real background on the Romulans. Honestly, they are a fascinating culture. I loved seeing the old school BoP and Seven, even if her appearance was far too brief. 8/10.

Next week looks like it could be obnoxious or so much fun!
