That's too bad, Noah Hawley is responsible for the best comic book TV series I've ever seen.. I was really looking forward to his take on Star Trek.

The idea of it being rejected because they were "enraged" by similarities to The Orville sounds so ridiculous.
It's silly, what could the similarities even be? That it features juvenile humor? That the secondary crew members are TNG characters with the serial numbers filed off? That there is a lot of stunt casting of the producer/creator's more famous friends? That it's a love letter to Berman Trek?

OK, maybe the last one... :p

Beige sets.

I heard it got canned because Hawley insisted that the sets look exactly like they did in the 60's and they said "Hell NO" We want Trek to look like Discovery and we also want it to have political agenda's. Hawley said 'Never! Not on my watch. This is one is for the REAL fans." They then said "Fuck the fans. We hate them. We only want SJW's. Also we hate Trump. Vote Bernie in 2020. Also we love the fact they will never even read this. We have owned them!

Okay, I think this was meant to be funny, but let's not veer too far away from verifiable fact and reports which can be linked, shall we?

And @Jayson1 ? Keep the current US politics out of here; there are forums in which that would be an appropriate topic, but this is not one of them.

This forum is for provided for discussion of a particular subset of Star Trek movies, and—unless the political side topic has some direct relevance to the Trek film / character / story under discussion (Trump and Bernie most assuredly do not)—I'd like to keep it that way.

Yep I was going for humor. Sort of making fun about how these rumors always play and sound exactly like the type of thing some fans want to here.

There’s something special about seeing Trek in a cinema, and it does have the potential to reach a broader audience.

The gap has certainly narrowed in terms of presentation, though.

To this day I personally know people whose exposure to Trek comes from watching the 13 movies, some who even consider them selves fans of those movies, but they've never watched much TV Trek at all. In terms of international markets also, Movie Trek has a bigger cache than TV Trek. It's probably been seen by more people on the whole than have ever sat down to watch the shows.

Aside from the market share, it's also just a shame to lose the lineage. Trek started on TV, but has had a movie franchise for 37 years. For 15 of those years, the movies were proudly co-existing with the TV show. I'd consider it a pity if Trek is now something which is either on TV or in movie theaters, but not both.

I don't want movie trek to die. As much as I love the series, I tend to have only watched them all the once. I cherish the discs I have of the movies however and have rewatched them for decades.

Same. Even though the line is blurred with modern television being so cinematic, I still get more excited about a movie than a TV series. It seems more like an event. I also kind of like the idea of the TV Trek continuing in the prime timeline, and the movies continuing in the Kelvin timeline. That way the movies are complete unrestrained by canon.
