I'm not saying newer material by different artists can't be downright spectacular, I love what they did with the TOS characters in the Abrams movies, but they are new versions of the characters. Just like Mount, Peck, Romijn and these writers and directors and artists aren't the ones who put Star Trek on our screen in 1966. These are new versions of the characters driven by wholly different personalities.
The only difference is I'm not treating them like those personal heroes from long ago, I want them to capture my imagination in their own right. I want them to make the characters their own, not just try to act like their counterparts from fifty-plus years ago, trying to feed fandoms inability to let go of the past. I want to be excited by where these people want to take me today, not where I've already been for the last 48 years.
Of course, your mileage may vary.
