Now THAT'S what she should have looked like in the show.
The straight pylons and much closer color palette make a huge difference. Still not the original, but definitely something I could buy as being part of the timeline.

Oh, and those dimensions count as onscreen canon until onscreen canon contradicts them. Suck it, over 400 meters!![]()
Sure, the Enterprise can be some sort of insignificant micro ship in the fleet...
And yet Burnham and Stamets still considered her awesome and impressive and unique in the fleet.
Obviously Discovery is trying to maintain the mythos that the Constitution's were supposed to be the cream of the crop of the Federation fleet..yet being fairly mediocre in size and technology.
The Enterprise B was originally the top dog but eventually over the years was reduced to a cruiser designation due to the much larger vessels taking the heavy cruiser and up spots.Over time the ships that were supposed to be rare and powerful get progressively nerfed and common.
In TOS there were originally only supposed to be 12 Constitution Class starships, so having five in one place (The Ultimate Computer) was supposed to be overwhelming, and having Enterprise defeat four of them effortlessly was supposed to be staggering.
I think it was in the TNG Technical Journal there were only supposed to be like..6 or 8 Galaxy class ships, because they were so rare and powerful..yet in some DS9's "Sacrifice of Angels" there are 4 in one segment of one fleet formation.

It was a superb design that lasted a long time but even so it was superseded in the end, even in Star Trek tonnage and hard points matter.
I always thought of it as standard military doctrine.
Carriers - 4
Battleships - 8
Cruisers - 16
Destroyers - 32
Frigates - 64
Tugs/Lifters/Supply - 128
You will always need more of the smallest ships to do the more mundane fetching and carrying, not to mention fleet supply.
The large number of Galaxy class in one place can be explained due to the expectation of a large scale battle, they were not all Galaxy class though, some were Nebula class and other variants.
Its probably done that way to make it easier for the CGI dept, lots of copies of the same ship with different registration. No, they're not all Galaxy class by any imagination..but there are an extreme number of ships in some shots. At one point there's no less than 10 galaxy class in one shot, and I doubt the entire class would be assembled for one fleet action.
Of course the sensible answer is they built more, however it does kind of take away the prestige when you're serving on one of 25 of a class instead of one of six.
That's all I was meaning.

I think they also said they accelerated production, built stripped down ships and assigned the minimum crews required, corners get cut in times of war.

I actually think they ditched the name and registry on most of them.
Does not surprise me at all.Only the ships that realistically would be seen close enough had them, IE the Excelsior Class USS Valley Forge, the USS Galaxy, however for her you only see her lower registry
Does not surprise me at all.
I have not watched any DS9 since the early 2000's.

In-universe, it's probably like a red squad thing. The Constitution class got special uniforms (as seen in Q&A, they had the colored uniforms for a few years before they became fleetwide), full holodecks (as seen in TAS), and a candy-style interior design. Makes the ship feel more cool and all the officers on other ships envious, regardless of whether that envy is actually justified or not.Yeah, I kind of wonder why they felt that way, since all of those qualities fit the Discovery far more than the Enterprise. The characters’ praise of the ship seems quite forced. It’s like the last season of That ‘70’s Show where they brought in the Randy character to replace Eric and spent the entire season trying to convince us that he was this awesome guy, but nobody really believed it.
And let's face it: the Discovery is ugly compared to Constitution-class starships. Sorry, but you know it's true.
