A ‘Star Wars’ Movie Directed by a Woman Is ‘Absolutely’ Happening, Vows Kathleen Kennedy

I always said KK has her mind on entirely the wrong things. I mean she has not learned. And as for diversity.. I always believed that story comes before that, that the real fans no matter their race or gender would rather get lost in a well thought out universe than having their own race being personally represented. I don't remember any complaints that there not any hispanic or enough black hobbits.

You never disappoint.

All of the new movies have been good ones.

All? No.
2 have been good to great. The rest... not so much. One has even given the prequels a run for terribleness.

Please, the low bar for Star Wars is the Holiday Special. So far, every single thing produced for it has been superior to it. In fact the only current known things worse than the Holiday Special are various atrocities, the worst diseases known to infect humans and Michael Bay.

Again, I just put story abopve diversity. I don't think many true SW fans complained about the lack of diversity (even if they were not personally represented) until recent years and "outrage" culture became a thing on Twitter. The fact is, of course Hollywood in general needs to increase opportunities for all, and this is not limited to Lucasfilm. But story should be first. I did not watch Coming To America and think to myself (why are there not white people? The line between what you might "inclusion" and what you might call "pandering" might be different for all of you, but there will always be a problem when agenda, virtue signalling, or status quo shifting comes AHEAD of storytelling.. because the stories will always inevitably suffer, and the franchises will be in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, and this is demonstrated by how no one complained when LotR "lacked" diversity, as did no one complained, including myself, when they fired a back actor to play Sam Wilson in the MCU.

Oh bullshit. People have been laughing at Star Wars lack of diversity for forty-years. It stuck out like a sore thumb even in the 80's. You're complaining because a white male refuge is using minority and female characters front and center instead of keeping them in the background.

The current outcry has nothing to do with "story".

So “true” Star Wars fans, who are these fans? Who decides? I’ve been a fan since I was 5 and I’d like to see people like me. In fact I may more of a fan than you because I don’t complain about them endlessly and display utter confusion about established ideas in the franchise.

And again.
Why do you automatically assume that having diversity in a project is antithetical to a good story?
You just listed examples of how diversity didn’t used to be a thing in movies. I don’t even think you fully comprehend what diversity means, it’s just a word you’ve been told is scary so you repeat it and other bullshit like someone in a cult.

I remember for years that fans would joke about Lando being the only black man in the galaxy. At least before the prequels, when we got Mace. So we were up to two.

Maybe so. I also remember that Lando being the only black guy in the galaxy was a complaint., Fair enough. But in the culture, the idea that this was a great story, these were great characters - that was always more the thinking.. and that's how and why they have endured .. at least until now, where you can't say anything without potential offending someone

Don't start throwing shade at me. I'm not the head of Lucasfilm, who has messed up nearly every project, with director after director being fired, and the creation fo a severe split ion the fanbase, a clear interest not in story but in what sexual organs a director has.

haha i quoted myself instead of "editing". I am used to Facebook nowadays

Sure. But, even taking in just the movies, there's more bad than good, and only a little bit of great. Throw in all of the Star Wars media... the Holiday Special, the Ewok TV movies, Droids, etc... it's still there's more bad than good.

I want to be fair here, and that probably doesn't seem like anyone can accept that on this board but whatever. She did not get up and announce this, this was in response to a question she was asked on the spot. I actually respect her answer in that context. I also respect her as an excellent producer of films .. individual films, in her time working for the likes of Spielberg.

I only question her abilities as leader and studiohead (the Kevin Feige of Star Wars)

Bullshit, if you actually felt this way you wouldn't be throwing a fit if they even mentioned someone who has skin a color other than, and/or has a vagina.

The problem with this kind of attitude is that if you don't make a point of trying to diversity things, then everybody just goes for the default of white, unless there is a "story reason" for them to something other than white, and more often than not those "story reasons" for black people ending being that they are from the ghetto or a gang banger, for hispanics they're drug dealers, for asians they know martial arts, and for people from the Middle East they're terrorists. The way to improve this is by casting non-white actors when there isn't a story reason for them to be whatever race they are.

The LOTR thing is mainly just due to the source material, and the reason no one complained when they hired a black actor for Sam Wilson in the MCU is because he's black in the comics.

I think must have repressed Episode 1, because I just forgot he existed.

Shit, now it’s all coming back! George Lucas bad touched my childhood while I was still underaged.

A good story is a good story, diversity is just involved in casting and writing. It has no impact on quality. If anything it introduces the possibility of good stories we haven’t gotten the chance to see yet. Different kinds of people have experiences and points of view that others don’t, so when given the opportunity they can take a story in directions that those same others would not be able to. The Matrix was written and directed by two closeted trans women and watching the original with that in mind shows ways that their life experience influenced it. If not for that experience, it would not exist. For example, the scene where Agent Smith is holding Neo in front of the train calling the sound “the sound of inevitability”, that’s based on a suicide attempt made by Lana Wachowski. The Matrix is about the transgender experience told through the lens of a cyberpunk revolution against machines controlling the human race and the original is still beloved and one of the most successful films of the 90s. It speaks to people of all kinds and all over the world. Even to some weirdos who took the pill scene in a very terrible direction.

Having diversity in front and behind the camera gives us more good stories, not less.

So you're assuming the story will suffer because a woman is directing a movie?

That's the most absurd thing I've heard in a long time

maybe it won't suffer. My issue is that before we even know the story or direction, she is putting the fact that a woman needs to direct above the story.

The fact is, you all are just trying to throw shade at me. KK has shown mismanagement of these films, and her itnerviews speak for themselves. That said.. I won't ignore that two women directed a total of three episodes of the Star Wars show on Disney Plus. Chow, in particular, deftly handled her episodes. I have a hunch that the Obi Wan series will be retooled into a film and she will direct it. I have no problem with that.

So your fine with a female director when you’ve seen her work and liked it? Then why would you worry about another female director when the same exact person who hired the one you liked in the first place is making that decision. If she already hired Chow and put her in charge of Obi Wan, why can’t see make another good decision with this project that we know nothing about? If you examine those she’s hired, you’ve complained more about the men than the women. So maybe you’d be happier with more diversity.
