Umm Didn't Del Arco himself confirm he's playing (be called)"Hugh" way back when at the comicon where the first trailer was first released. San Deigo I believe. Am i missing something?

Now that I think about it I can picture Hugh asking Picard how Geordi is doing, and that maybe Geordi is the reason he still uses the name.

Assimilation is scary. Borg babies aren't. It's no mystery why we focus on the former rather than the latter. Borg babies don't affect our people. Assimilation does. I don't think we ever need to hear about Borg babies again. But it doesn't mean it doesn't happen!

Can only speak for myself, but i found the original Borg before First Contact way scarier and far more interesting than the assimilation zombies they became with that movie!

I feel the original idea of the Borg was one that worked better in concept than execution, because there weren't that many stories you could generate about a completely impersonal force interested only in technology. (I was going to say that Stargate SG-1 did a better job with the Replicators, but I checked, and they only did two distinct Replicator stories, a two-parter and a one-parter, before they started introducing android versions to make the stories more personal.) They basically had to dilute the original idea in order to get more stories out of the concept. Some ideas lend themselves better to a single story than a whole series.

The problem with SF/fantasy in series television is that the more alien and unusual a concept is, the harder it is to maintain that alienness as multiple writers tackle the idea and filter it through their preconceptions and habits of thought. There's a tendency for it to evolve into something more familiar and conventional. For instance, the Bajoran Wormhole aliens were originally depicted as profoundly alien entities that existed outside of time and barely comprehended corporeal existence, beings that had sent out Orbs that were interpreted in religious terms by the Bajorans, but that seemed to have little concept of what humanoids even were. Yet by the end of the series they'd been retconned into conventional "gods" that took an active, conscious interest in guiding the Bajorans and manipulating humanoid affairs and even had a very Manichaean god/devil dualism with the Pah-wraiths.

As I've said before, the Borg are basically an "existential horror" concept grafted into sci-fi. And in horror, less is more. If too much light is shined on something terrifying, it ceases to be an object of terror, and just becomes a mundae thing.

He didn't have one. He's a native-born Borg (like the baby in "Q Who").

I agree there's no actual PROOF of this, but is there any other explanation as to why Hugh didn't revert to a pre-assimilation state (as we've seen occur with other ex-drones)? The fact that he HAD no former life would be the easiest way out of this.

The Borg were scary in Q Who and BOBW but I think they stopped being scary when Hugh appeared. They were humanised. The ones on Descent weren't scary either so I can see why they went the robot zombie route with them in First Contact. They looked scary as hell from that point onwards despite being used frequently on Voyager. My mom can't stand looking at them to this day

A lot of Voyager haters in this thread. Don't tell them about Seven (and possibly the holo Doc) appearing on Picard.

I recently rewatched all of Voyager in few months with my wife. It's a lot better than I remember (except the episodes focusing on Chakotay, yeah, those are crap).
Now we started rewatching DS9. It's a lot worse than I remember. Go figure. Yeah, at this time, I would rate Voyager above DS9.

Regarding DS9, have you finished all 7 seasons? While I still enjoy them, I will agree there's a lot less happening in S1 and S2 then in the following seasons. From S3 onwards, "hold on to your butts".

I have seen everything! I am rewatching everything from scratch with my wife as it is her first time. Yes, I know DS9 will get better. But it seems in first couple seasons, it's actually O'Brien that's holding the show together. Quark and Odo and Garak are fascinating characters while Sisko does not do much for the show. In that regard, Voyager has always been about Janeway from the very beginning till the end (with Seven the only one that managed to partially steal the focus of the show in latter seasons). It just goes to show what a great actor (and Kate Mulgrew is fantastic) can do to a mediocre show. She was able to raise it to another level, and it is all the more obvious on multiple viewing.

The Borg in Q Who, Best of Both Worlds, etc..they're..an interesting villain but seemed more misunderstood.

The Borg in FC genuinely seemed malevolent, and looked the part too. Thankfully it came with a visual retcon too.
