Overtly modern language was one of the things that bothered me in Witcher, as much as I enjoyed it otherwise.

It kinda depends on the project for me. I love the elevated language in something like JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS or THE LORD OF THE RINGS, but looser, more anachronistic language worked perfectly for XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS, which had a whole different tone.

2.5 stars is being generous. It's not a good episode. Lots of dumb tecnobabble, lots of REALLY dumb mythology-making. Only a couple of truly good scenes, like the one with his old doctor friend. And really loose plotting which only moves the story forward in tiny increments. Picard's narrative has only moved forward about a half step since the end of the last episode and it's not balanced out by much else.

The much talked-about admiral scene is similar to the interview in that it's just combative for its own sake while sacrificing any real logic.

It was just more table setting and I'm very eager for the show to get on with it.

I'll say this much: I think Picard's storytelling goals are at odds with CBS All Access' streaming platform. Aside from their need to keep subscription numbers up month-in and mouth-out, I think this season should've been released all at once.

Can't argue with that. It seems to be a one long movie that is just chopped up.

Belatedly weighing in on Soji and Narek hooking up so quickly, I actually appreciated the narrative economy there. We only have ten episodes; did any of us really want to waste time watching them go through some extended will-they-or-won't-they mating dance before cutting to the chase? I think we can fill in the blanks between their first meeting and their third date or whatever.

And it's certainly not implausible for two attractive, single young people to hook up when they find themselves stuck on an abandoned Borg cube for the duration, especially when Narek is deliberately trying to charm his way into her confidences.

And as for Soji . . . after a long, ugly day extracting prosthetic eyeballs from Borgified corpses, who wouldn't want to unwind with a hot Romulan afterwards?

Hah. I remembering rebutting that complaint back in the ENTERPRISE days. ...

Cool. Doesn't alter anything though. It is one thing to portray an occasionally bad apple as I did not say I saw Vulcans as perfect. The elvish races in LotR were not perfect. Even in "day 1" of TOS Vulcans were portrayed as, overall, an honest and virtuous race. Our closest friend and allie. Sarek and T'Pau were good. Neither T'Pring nor Stonn were evil. We viewers may not have liked her choice to spurn Spock, however, that was very understandable. Sybok was not malevolent, and that is why Valeris was a "twist" (or supposed to be anyway). That is the foundation of my personal belief and POV.

I do not recall TNG furthering the notion that Vulcans were duplicitous or schemers. What I saw Voyager had Tuvok as a solid fellow. So it wasn't until Enterprise that I saw the extreme streach of Vulcan's nature.

The point is that there was no war in 2256-7 as there was in Discovery. They're different and incompatible continuities.

As long as Burnham has the suit they can pull a reset any time they like to undo that war, all she has to do is go back far enough and stop all the messing with time in the first place plus deal with T'Kuvma and his supporters quietly so they never send the message, she will then either cease to exist, return back to her family as they never died in the first place or the suit may protect her from the changes and she will have to go and do a Yoda so as not to screw it all up again.

The fact we saw the Discoprise in Picard wont cause any issues as they will just go with that version if we do ever have reason to see it again and if not then it doesnt matter, its just an updating of the original although I appreciate some dont like it, I think its alright the same as the new film versions.

I havent seen it either, prefer to stick to the portrayal in the books/games myself although I have been told its alright.

Not to mention the differences in the Klingon appearances are markedly different, the nostrils and ears notwithstanding.

If we declared a different reality for every time something was added or subtracted from Klingon make up we'd have to change the name of the show to Sliders.

On the issue of language, while Trek isn't known for a lot of modern slang. It has used older slang before. And things like Dude and Hot as adjectives aren't new slang at all. That's dialogue that could have been used nearly 50 years ago.

It reminds me of a terrible scene in my opinion in Voyage Home, when Kirk says a double dumb ass on you. Yet we have heard them swear, on occasions and its aways been used in an appropriate manner.

The scene that did annoy me a little was the opening on Mars. It's a scene I really liked but also disliked. We have almost never seen anyone work manual labor in Trek's history. I think working at Sisko's or working a lounge/bar is the closest we have ever seen.

And I understand trying to get a little closer to what one would consider blue collar work environment and language between coworkers, it just felt too artificial for me. Most likely because we have never been exposed to that before. But the heart of the scene was very effective, just not the language used. That so far is the only dialogue scene that really felt jarring to me.

I wouldn't call it wonderful - I don't enjoy that people are miserable, though I do get annoyed that they're miserable over something so trivial.

Loved that show back in the day, its funny though it wouldn't stand a chance these days.

It would be one season and cancelled on the Scifi channel.

Well, if that's why he's not watching Picard, then he wasn't that interested in it to begin with.

I cropped it short as the guy's comment was quite long and went on to complain about Picard not liking sci-fi, and a whole host of other things that made him hate the new show. None of it was relevant to the DSC Enterprise model.
