I guess I was asking because when the photos of his Admiral uniform surfaced, it had 4 pips and I said "Wait a minute, how did he get promoted so quickly after Nemesis? Is this like TNG season 1 where all Admirals had the same uniforms?" So I was happy to see a 1-pip Commodore in tonight's episode.

I enjoyed this episode, and although I didn't think it was as good as first, it definitely leaves me wanting more. I heard the creators describe the show as 10 chapters of a book, and also that the first 3 episodes are like the series premiere, and I guess it definitely feels that way.

The Mars intro scene didn't bother me (I read some initial complaints about it), but the intro with Picard and his Romulan friends seemed kind've clunky to me. It was just an info dump basically. A secret group that hates AI - no one knows why, but I guess we'll find out? I thought the episode got better as it went on. It felt short, and I think it was a few minutes shorter than the premiere.

Sounds like there are other humanoid androids out there created by Maddox, or at least the Romulans have reason to believe there are - perhaps 5? (the 5 Queens in the dream with data?). I'm ready to meet more of the new crew!

"The Dominion? What's the Dominion?"

And things went downhill after that.
That war was a watershed in every way, no doubt they will be very well aware that they didnt actually win it either, only the actions of S31 (Founder Virus), Bashir (Cure), Garak (Romulan Alliance), Worf (killing Gowron) and Rom ( SR Mines) did that.

Credit where credit is due.

I thought it was Lieutenant to Captain, mind you after saving the Earth from suffering the same fate as Vulcan they could hardly undo it.
Yeah...I mean what are you going to do after that? Guy successfully commands a ship after captain and first officer are gone, saves his captain, destroys huge threat and saves Earth, proving that he can handle the biggest stresses of command and succeed.

"Thank you for saving the planet, Mister Kirk. You are hereby reinstated to the rank of Leiutenant."

Kirk could have been Commander in Chief of Starfleet in the PU if he had wanted it never mind in the KU after saving Earth, all he would have had to do is say.

Who would have dared to stand in his way.

After he returned from his most famous five-year mission Kirk was already a living legend. He probably could have been elected President of the Federation had he wanted to put his name up for a vote.

I dont know about that, the Federation is a big place and not everyone would necessarily be aware of what had happened during the five year mission, due to secrecy, need to know and all that.

However his actions in the films TMP (Vger was hard to miss), TVH (Pocket Whales) and Undiscovered Country definitely would be in the public eye as they would be well nigh impossible to cover up.

The events in the others were probably covered up and the general population of the Federation may not know anything about them.

The fact he was just a Rear Admiral may have been Starfleet Command's way of keeping him from rising too high. Somebody as popular as Kirk was even at that point could have left his imprint on a brass that probably preferred to remain stodgy and procedural. Not rocking the boat.

So new theory, the Romulans hijacked the synths to attack mars, so the federation would distrust them, and destroy them.

Also I don’t think that the Commodore is a Romulan in disguise. In dialogue between ‘Rizzo’ and her brother, said she was just an ally, not a colleague. Could just be a Vulcan that also hates synths, maybe she lost family in the attack. They’re allies of convenience.

I'll buck with the consensus and say that I enjoyed it modestly more than the first episode.

The first third or so of the episode was indeed a bit clunky. The opener from Utopia Planitia seemed to be totally unneeded filler, since we already knew what happened - not only from Children of Mars, but the infodump given during the interview in the first episode. And the initial Zhat Vash stuff was just off. Not only was it the worst example of infodump in the episode, it was unnecessary, because the later scenes showed us the Romulan conspiracy without directly telling us. The weird back-and-forth editing between Chateau Picard and Dahj's apartment was strange as well.

But after that I think the episode recovered nicely and held my interest. Picard's personal arc across this episode as he seeks to find a way back into space was compelling, and I had no major issues with the admiral scene - I didn't even notice the profanity until others mentioned it. And the stuff on the reclaimed borg cube worked well I think. There was a bit of infodump mixed in, but it played in a more natural Trekkian manner. I'm also a bit relieved that although Narek is clearly an antagonist they're not going to have him play the role of a straight-up villain in the season - that they're introducing some sort of emotional conflict within him as well. Isa Briones so far seems as good as Soji as she was as Dahj. I definitely feel like she's a slightly different character (a bit more buttoned down/serious?) but I'm glad they didn't decide to make her the "evil one" or some such ridiculous thing.

I am a bit let down that although this episode is nominally an introduction to Raffi, she gets about three lines of dialogue. I suppose this is continuing what was done with Narek in the first episode - including a single scene from a main cast member an "episode early" so they get listed in the title credits?

I doubt that a Romulan would be a commodore in Starfleet. So it is more likely that she is a Vulcan who is also a member of the Zhat Vash. Maybe she also shares a hatred for synths so she found common cause with them.

Then again, if a Romulan flag officer wants to join Starfleet, you aren't going to bump her down to Lieutenant. T'Pol didn't need to start at the bottom when switching loyalties in ENT; the same might happen here, with Starfleet considering it a coup (and the Romulan perhaps considering it a nice first step in a coup, too).

I think it's pretty clear from the dialogue that Narek and his sister had that she's outside of the organization, even if they share common goals for the moment. Whether she's Section 31 or one of the Romulan sympathizers within the Vulcan race remains to be seen.

I do have to admit there was a brief period during the Vulcan commodore's dressing down of "Rizzo" I thought that she was Romulan - because she seemed to be emoting a bit too much for a Vulcan. However, I guess that can be chalked up to bad direction.

The Vulcan Commodore is just another Cartwright. A co-conspirator with plotters from outside the Federation.

There was mention of a ‘Romulan Free State’ in the dialogue on the Cube. Sounds like they control the space it’s in.

Or the talks of synths make her emotionally compromised
