Donny's Refit Enterprise Interiors (Version 2.0)

There sure is a lot of empty space in the room that the horizontal tube lives in!
I know, I know, refit aesthetics... :sigh:

I know, right? In the movie, the room appears to stretch back even further than what I've depicted, and there's just NOTHING back there!

One of the things that excites me about doing eventual Miranda or Oberth main engineering rooms is being able to do away with things like a bunch of useless space, and making things seem more compact and useful.

Hello everyone! I hope everyone had a happy holiday! I'm back at working on the Refit Engineering set here and there when I can, but I must admit that the hustle and bustle of the holidays and getting back to work and juggling my new relationship haven't left me much time. But, I've gotten stuff done nonetheless!

I was unable to visit Trekbbs the last week (the website would freeze and hang on both my home PC, work PC, and smartphone), so I meant to post these shots earlier. Did anyone else experience this issue?

Anyway, I've finished the horizontal intermix shaft of the Refit. I've approached the point in which it branches off towards the nacelles differently than I did the last time I rendered this set. I've kept everything simple and clean, as I feel over-complicating this non-canon section wouldn't jive with the rest of the set. Keep in mind that I'm doing the TMP version of the set first, and will then do a proper TWOK version with all the added details.

Excellent Donny as usual and of course Happy New Year.

Given that the Enterprise was launched prematurely because of the V'Ger emergency, it could be that it looked so sparse because it was literally unfinished -- there were components that were not yet installed. In my novel Ex Machina way back when, I used that as an excuse for the bare, sterile look of the sets and said that they'd stopped at a starbase to complete the work and make the living areas more inviting and such. Maybe they also installed some monitor consoles or something down at the far end of the intermix shaft.

And yet, in 2285, it remains empty....movies.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/twok-dc-hd/chapter05/st2-twok-dc-0656.jpg

That's looking great, Donny!
I haven't experienced any issues browsing the site myself, but I'm glad the issue seems to have resolved itself. :bolian:

I appreciate the idea of creating the illusion of the engine room going way back. I never liked the execution. That set is too clean and too empty and there should have been machinery and equipment on the opposite side of the walkway to make the space look functional. As is there's nothing much in the set for anyone to do except stand around the lava lamp with their hands at their sides.

Welcome back Donny! The update looks great, and seeing the entirety of the horizontal core like that really makes this era of Starfleet engineering looks more distinct from the usual vertical cores, too bad we never got to see it in all its glory on the films.

Regarding the emptiness of the room back there, I really like the solution Falke employed on their Enterprise-B engineering. You obviously can't do it here due to the canon evidence we have, but having some stations there really helped IMO.

Damn, that room is needlessly infinite! Good thing they have inertial dampeners...

IIRC, in MSGTTE, that flat wall that runs along the length of the intermix room contains a turboshaft that takes people to the upper shuttlebay control room because that walk is so long. You can see in the distance where the wall turns and blocks off the rear passage, with just a narrow hallway on the right - that's the main walkway path to the control room that nobody ever uses. :)

Wild to see it from the reverse perspective.

Maintenance might require that much space. That space might also be used for storage of hyperdense degenerate matter to be used for fuel. Though there is no sign of a long storage tank(s) in any version of that set seen onscreen, it could be argued that it isn’t installed but for long duration voyages. Kind of like a sailing vessel packed to the gunwales for a long voyage.

Getting more of the finer details modeled out. Tonight I tackled the two wall-mounted consoles on the upper level of main engineering.

We only get one glimpse of them in TMP, but we do see a surviving panel on the upper level of the TNG engineering set in "Heart of Glory". Note that we never see the leftmost side of the graphic of the left panel in the TMP screencap, so I had to fill in the blanks.

Here they are up-close, filled with random text I either conjured up or stole from some of the aircraft-style buttons on "The Cage" bridge set ;)

(I originally thought the panel above was entirely blue and green colored, but you can make out a faint bit of magenta on the very edge of the TMP screencap above, so I balanced the bits we don't see with a bit more magenta.)

Donny, you probably know this, but there's a closeup of the panel in The Schizoid Man.
Ah! I knew I'd seen this before but couldn't remember what episode it was in! Thanks!

For those wondering, here's the panel in TNG but with a different graphic all together.

Seeing it up-close like this, it's clear the corners are more rounded than I've depicted them, and the panel itself is inset into the housing, not resting on top of the housing like other control panel surfaces on the Refit sets. I'll have to make some small adjustments.

Honestly, I kinda prefer your version. It's too bad it didn't look more like that.

So, in TMP, we see that N Deck, the level above Main Engineering, has a hexagonal opening at the top. In the shot, we're actually seeing that hex opening up into the soundstage, as there was no ceiling constructed for the set, AFAIK (one may have been built for this area in TNG, but I'm unsure and I don't feel like hunting for a shot).

As a matter of fact, there was no intermix segment constructed above the one that is most prominent on this deck, as you can see that there is only a single "donut" above this warp core segment and isn't doubled, like all the segments below it.

However, we know through Probert's schematics and MSGTTE that the intermix shaft continues upwards and meets the impulse deflection crystal. It is also commonly assumed that inspection rooms surround the intermix shaft at each level above N Deck, much like they do below. Given the architecture of the Enterprise's "neck", it is unclear how large these inspection rooms are, and the room just up one level on M deck must reside between two torpedo tubes, and therefore be pretty small and tight. So it's safe to assume they aren't as large as the inspection rooms on N, O, P, Q, R, S, and T decks. Anyway, perhaps one day I'll get to model out the decks of the "Neck" of the Enterprise and will be able to visualize those intermix inspection rooms.

But until then, I've got to cap off the intermix shaft at the ceiling of N deck, which is convenient since it's also the uppermost level of the secondary hull. I could continue it up through the "neck" decks, but alas, I don't have the bandwidth to flesh out those decks at this time, so this "cap" will suffice for now.

I wanted to go with something that gives the impression that the intermix shaft continues upward, but closes the room off so I don't have to render everything above it. Here's a quick mockup of what I'm thinking. I don't want anything too flashy or distracting, as the primary focus of the engine room should ALWAYS be the intermix shaft itself.

I'm going to add some radial ribbing on the conic section there tomorrow night after sleeping on this idea, if I'm still feeling good about it then. What do you guys think?

Btw, here's an view of the entire secondary hull's engineering complex:

In Encounter at Farpoint, they only had a white scrim covering the top of the set as Picard does his little tour at the beginning. The same is true for when we're looking up at the Klingon being shot in Heart of Glory, although some cross-beams can be seen.

In season 2, again a bit is seen in The Schizoid Man, appearing no different. The same for Time Squared.

We only see a bit of it in The Undiscovered Country when a guy is dangling from a railing. Same again.

And that's all I have at hand.

It looks like you have it set up for the glass elevators to go all the way down from what you call N deck to the bottom, as seems to have been the intent. But it looks like you have opening for them all the until the bottom, but there ought to still be an indent for them to settle into (and there really oughta have been something closing the holes so no idiot took and wrong step).
