Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

I'm surprised that we still don't have a synopsis or episode title with it being 2 weeks away. We should get something pretty soon as we approach the calendar window for when DVRs will have a listing.
You can DVR stuff on streaming services? I thought DVRs were just for stuff on regular TV.

Well my DVR (I'm indeed in Canada) goes to the 20th right now. This means I may get the episode info this weekend. We will see.

Depends on the source. Most are on demand so there is no need.

But liveTV streaming services (Sling, etc) tend to have it. Sling does. I think YouTubeTV does as well.

So, it appears, we really are getting a continuation of Star Trek that most everyone loves and can't wait for, updated for 21st century. I'm trying to hedge my enthusiasm, but I'm failing miserably. Is it 23rd yet?

Curb your enthusiasm. This quote from Sir Patrick's latest interview indicates that 'Picard' is definitely not TNG 2.0 and is closer to the more dystopian tone of DS9 and DISCO. It is not surprising, since by 2399 the Federation is still recovering from the traumas of the Borg invasion, the Dominion War, and the apparent Romulan assault on Mars:

“In a way, the world of ‘Next Generation’ had been too perfect and too protected,” he says. “It was the Enterprise. It was a safe world of respect and communication and care and, sometimes, fun.” In “Picard,” the Federation — a union of planets bonded by shared democratic values — has taken an isolationist turn. The new show, Stewart says, “was me responding to the world of Brexit and Trump and feeling, ‘Why hasn’t the Federation changed? Why hasn’t Starfleet changed?’ Maybe they’re not as reliable and trustworthy as we all thought.”

Also, some of the dialog has been leaked from the first episode of Star Trek: Picard titled "Picard."

Picard: Picard, Picard Picard Picard.
Admiral: Picard Picard...Picard Picard.
Picard: Picard!
Admiral: Picard? Picard!

I trust you understand what is going on.
Sounds like Pikachu.

Thank you for not failing me, Internet.

Not only that, but they are using DSC Shuttlecraft still, seen in the latest teaser. I'm guessing the producers are going to tell us nitpickers 'not to worry about it'. But I can't....you can't use another shuttle design from 170 years ago and think it should still be used in service.
The Magee class from Disco is also still around, and the UFP logo is the same. We have to accept that continuity is simply gone.
Unless... they're refitting old ships in a hurry to evacuate the planets threatened by the Hobus nova...? And all the modern shuttles are needed for this massive relocation mission? That would fix it for me.

Interesting very loose recurring parallels between the four main new rogue crew members of La Sirena.
and the characters of Gene Roddenberry's original 1964 StarTrek pitch:
Side by side bellow.

-(Obviously the pitch description of "Number one became Majel Barrett's character in the pilot ep, then for the series some aspects went to the revamped Spock, and the "Dark...Nile Valley" aspect to Uhura, although as per the new series set up, she is analogues of his once new #1 in Raffi Musiker:

-The navigator José Ortega character was dropped from the pilot, (interesting (to me) Roddenberry envisioned a latino lead in the first crew in 1964, yet the studio didn't actually bring it about till over 30 years after with arguably Chakotay and B'elanna). For the new series the analogue is now pilot Chris Rios.

Continued: The emotional Spock expressing "catlike curiosity over anything alien" which we first saw in the smiling emotional Spock of the pilot episode, was obviously dropped for series, and Spock was instead merged with the personality of the removed Number One of the pilot. Yet the "emotional" and somewhat curious catlike Vulcans would be the later revealed Romulans, who we see in Elnor in the new series.

And the Yeoman "colt" pretty much appeared as is in the pilot, other than maybe the "researcher" aspect, only visually similar to Agnes Jurati, so far described as “a researcher, and someone ‘who’s confused with her place in the world.'

Do the four "new" rogue crew members seem to be a somewhat re-purposed throwbacks to Roddenberry's 4 original crew pitch?
Coincidence? :

[FONT=Roboto]From the latest "We face a powerful enemy" TV spot posted earlier above.

The face in the painting is now filled in .
I assume that's Dahg.
Which places the "dream" in sequence, as he must have already seen her. (unless the "idea" of her was already implanted?)
So I'm guessing she shows up for help, he doesn't help her, ...then she 9as well his unfinished anxiety about Data/B4) begin to haunt his dreams. ..... followed by his inevitable call(see Seven) back into action!

Love the set up!

I wonder if Data's role is larger than weird dream sequences or informing Picard's conscience?

With the short trek, the comic and the trailers the 20 year backstory is starting to pull together (even though there is a lot we don't know)
