What is better: Gremlins, or Gremlins 2: The New Batch

Watched both at Christmas, hadn't seen the second in a long, long time...

I wondered myself if the second one wasn't a better film overall. Billy gets a more exciting role in containing the outbreak at the tower, Gizmo goes 'Rambo', etc. Loved seeing Christopher Lee and Robert Picardo in scenes together. The guy who owns Clamp tower is just the right amount of bizarre. Microwave With Marge, all the transformation serums etc. there is so much weird but entertaining shit just thrown in there, and the result is a unintentional masterpiece.

Right now I'm thinking New Batch is more fun to watch. First one is great and still holds up, but it starts a little slow and doesn't push the envelope completely over the edge like New Batch does. First Gremlins is a lot more like a traditional thriller/comedy and the New Batch is break-the-fourth-wall comedy with a couple of gory scenes.

Agreed on all your points

I'm a fan of both. I grew up watching them both non-stop. But, besides Stripe, there's really no other recognizable Gremlins in the first movie. The second movie, however, have all kinds of memorable ones. Mohawk (who's pretty frigging creepy), the Brain, the vegetable Gremlin, the electric Gremlin who gets put on hold , the gargoyle who attacks the Futtermans, the female Gremlin who's in love with Robert Picardo, the gangster one, the Looney Tunes one... overall, I'd have to go with the second one as being my favorite. Although it is EXTREMELY close.

Both are great in their own ways. First one is more, horror meets Frank Capra. Perfect for a non-traditional Christmas movie. The second movie is a kind of fun b-movie comedy were the gremlins definitely are what drives the movie and the humans are basically their just to react to them but that's okay. I think the first movie is the best story but the gremlins are more fun in the second one and also love all the meta and 4th wall breaking jokes.

I got a good laugh during "New Batch" when the scientists started to pick apart "the rules", presenting questions we nerdy moviegoers probably pondered after seeing the original movie. A nice bit of "meta" humor.

I've only seen the first one and for some reason I was under the impression that the second one was a steaming pile that everybody hated.

You had to do it, didn't you? You basicly had to end the entire topic in the second post..... Great, just great..... ;) ;) ;) ;)

The critics back in the day I think hated it but Critics are more wrong than right when it comes to genre stuff. A truism as true back then as it is today.

It is like trying to compare Alien and Aliens. Both are totally different types of movies with different goals. Neither is better or worse than the other.
