Yeah, Luke was lucky he made it that far. He might not have made it out of the rancor pit. Lando could have been caught. Artoo might not have been in a position to help. Jabba’s people might have found the saber. It honestly is a pretty reckless plan if a hidden weapon is literally all you have. They got lucky. Or they had the writers on their side. Regardless, it still doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Like I said, he had his weapon with R2-D2... but no he did NOT know how the rescue would go, and he did NOT know about the rancor, or almost anything else he would meet in the palace. And if you look at it from that light, it was actually a brilliant scene

It always struck me as incredibly convoluted and unnecessarily so. As you stated in another thread, if you think to much about it it falls apart.

Of the three films, the first part of ROTJ is one I do not enjoy as much.

your right.. but that's what makes it great. He just wanted to get everybody inside. Than his faith in his friends to "catch on" to any kind of way out was what he would use. He had no way of knowing what the palace was like. It would be far more boring if he knew everything, planned it out, and it all worked perfectly. It's enough for me to see a formerly rather epic hero that is now both confident, and proactive, and know that they can improvise

The point of my post was that when you think too hard about some of these details, they come apart. This may work for you and that's great! But for @fireproof78 and I, it falls apart. I do stand by that I believe that the opening of ROTJ is the weakest part of the OT. For *ME*, it just doesn't work.

I agree. And I will say it this way.
The originals are great films.. solid story, huge advancements in pushing film making forward.
As much as I love them aspects do not hold up to scrutiny or cynicism. Doesn't make them any less good. It's part of the reason I hate the sequels - because they are part of the same story and force people to put the original films under undue scrutiny. And that is not quite fair to them

    I agree. However...

...I think fans have been scrutinizing these movies long before TFA or even TPM came out.

sure it was all in good fun I think.
But now everything is 4k hi def, ongoing stories every line and moment is re-looked and drawn to parallel bits from the new films.. like all those wonderfully made memes that try to justify decisions Rian made.. (Luke tossing his saber in the beginning of the film is THE SAME as him tossing it at the end of ROTJ -- it's not at all). etc etc.

Okay, why do you need to bring up your feelings about TLJ in every conversation? I like you, man, but you have got to stop this. We ALL know how you feel.

Nope. That scrutiny has been there since I have been a SW fan and longer.

My biggest thing with Star Wars is the issue with Luke from the first film. I remember thinking how much happened to this guy back in the early 90s. It has been a huge issue for me for a long time because I just can't fathom how someone can function emotionally all that happens to him in a brief period of time. I still love the movie. But its a problem for me.

If Jabba had left R2 behind, Luke would’ve been FUCKED.

Maybe Luke had another light saber hidden in his rectum? Covering all his bases. :shifty:
