Star Trek: Myriad Universes - follow up(s)?

maybe someday some book will flash back to 2063-2151 to see just how involved the Vulcans were or weren't.

I'd love to see a miniseries do that. We know almost nothing about Trek's version of World War III, except the 'Eastern Coalition' was involved, as was Colonel Green (apparently not together, though). This is practically begging for a Treklit treatment.

Or, hell, even better: Series 7! Can you imagine what THAT would be like?

I'm really a fan of alternate histories of all sorts, so I'd love to see more stories in that vein.

Plus, I might one day Role-Play a "Star Trek: Sliders" campaign, and I need all the source material I can get!

I certainly wouldn't mind the opportunity to revisit the ALPU timeline. But, as Christopher said upthread, the editor responsible is no longer at Pocket. And honestly, if I were wearing the editor's hat, I would probably be more inclined to ask new authors create brand-new stories, rather than going back to the same well nearly a decade later.

If Pocket were publishing nuTrek novels they could have been Myriad Universe stories.

I did enjoy the Thelin and Voyager stories but found some of the others a bit depressing.

From a branding/marketing standpoint, no, that wouldn't have worked. The Trek movie brand is far, far better known than the MyrU brand, so it wouldn't have made sense to subsume it.

Plus, again, the MyrU stories in prose were all spontaneously occurring alternate histories, not time-travel offshoots.

What did you have in mind for a follow-up, or is that something you can't answer in case you ever do get the opportunity? If you can't answer directly, can you at least point me in a direction that you'd like to explore (Picard's era, or just a couple months/years after 2264, or something else all together)?

Arken was part of the Andorian Empire until shortly after the founding of the Federation, when Andor gave them their independence. Arkenites aren't warrior-like whatsoever, and yet with how amicable the split was implied to be in "Uncertain Logic", it seems as though they had basically the same position in the Andorian Empire as humans seemed to have in the Interstellar Union in "The Tears of Eridanus".

I have nothing in mind for a follow-up; I was speaking completely hypothetically. Sorry to disappoint.

Myriad Universes has to be my favourite series. I've always loved the concept of Alternate Realities/Timelines.

Even if they make no sense like the Mirror Universe and the Khan Universe having the exact same characters.

I'd love a prequel in the Tears of Eridanus universe showing how the Interstellar Union got its start up.

Or at least a timeline of events.

As I was reading through my Rise of the Federation novels again to be ready for "Live by the Code", it occurred to me that Christopher Bennett also created a small "Myriad Universe" in his Department of Temporal Investigations book "Forgotten History" (the reason it occurred to me was I was looking up a reference and the link was made). That's another one I'd like to see expanded into maybe a full story.

There used to be an annotations page but it's gone. The point of divergence was Surak's premature death. The NX-01 launched a decade late, with Shumar in command and Jonathan Archer as the designer of the engine.

I would happily see further stories set in the Myriad Universes timelines, but my personal favourites have to be TEARS OF ERIDANUS (Andorians! Captain Sulu! MORE Andorians! unregenerate Vulcan-Romulans! MORE Sulu!) and A LESS PERFECT UNION (it's definitely fascinating to see the two formative elements of the United Federation of Planet working each without the other, as well as fun seeing characters from ENTERPRISE interact with THE ORIGINAL SERIES*).

*The mental image of T'Pol living long enough to meet Mr Spock and visibly think "Been there, my boy" in the Prime Timeline is quite charming; it's also fun to imagine her catching up with the older T'Pau in not-entirely-friendly-but-not-enemies style ("T'Pau, do you ever think we might want to reconsider the Pon Far rituals for the sake of our posterity?" "Only in the presence of T'Pring").

- Oddly enough one would be interested in learning more about the Nausicaan situation in the Interstellar Union; it strikes me that there must have been quite a bit of manhandling required to convince the Nausicaans that there was the Andorian Way or no way in H*** they were going to get away with their traditional routine of piracy, coup & counter-coup at the expense of their neighbours (planetary & interstellar).

It strikes me that, even a century or so after the gentrification of Nausicaa there would likely to elements that might prefer Klingon hegemony - with its ample leg room for individuals looking to give the neighbours a kicking - or at least enjoy the chance to settle scores with those d*** Andorians & their bleeding heart chums.

Given that there would almost certainly be substantial elements in the population who rather preferred pursuing lifestyles other than 'survival of the meanest' and didn't even object to gentrification in the neighbourhood (much less working with the neighbours as part of the IU), there's likely to be fertile field for a great deal of intrigue, mutual suspicion and investigation at a time when the Klingons are at the gates ... and the hinges are starting to shake out of their sockets ...

Also, I'd love to find out whether IUES really does stand for Interstellar Union Expeditionary Ship after all - my working assumption - as well as whether or not my suspicion that Interstellar Guard rank is based on Air Force, rather than Naval precedent fits the setting as it develops.

As for A LESS PERFECT UNION, I'd be interested in advancing the timeline a little - perhaps to the point where UESS Excelsior is about to launch (one imagines this version of the Great Experiment having the registry number NCC-2300 for some reason), possibly in a period roughly comparable to THE MOTION PICTURE era (it might be interesting to see Will Decker get a chance to actually command his own ship for once!).

For some reason I like the idea that, in this timeline, the anticipated Klingon War didn't kick off as expected - with the Empire deciding to target the Romulan Star Empire instead - leading to an extremely complex diplomatic situation where each side of this conflict reaches out to pull in a new ally (though not the same ally), painfully complicating efforts by the United Earth Commonwealth and the Interstellar Coalition to turn their detente into an entente cordiale.

A situation quite certain to be further complicated by parties within each power working against the centre (for example the sometimes restive protectorates of the UE - a Martian or Centauran perspective on the 'Earth First' timeline could be fascinating - and members of the IC uplifted rather more quickly than they were in the Prime Timeline, but left somewhat grudgingly in dependance as a result).

I thought the worldbuilding of the Vostigye in "Places of Exile" was pretty cool, but all in all that novel seemed too much of a "This is everything that was wrong with Voyager and so here I am to make it all better" type of thing.

I was thinking Janeway would probably be killed off, since she was injured in "Scorpion" part two. Although, that might have been too similar to the Captain Riker story.

Thank you!

It turns out I didn't even remember the Nausicaans were in the IU, but you're right. I think probably I just wanted some species that was very unlikely to be in the Federation. The Orions were also absorbed into the IU, so there's a precedent for "pirate" species being members.

It's worth remembering that in this timeline, the Andorians did some awful things before the IU was formed: Shran carpet-bombed the Xindi following their attack on Andor. The Nausicaans probably respected that!

Also, I'd love to find out whether IUES really does stand for Interstellar Union Expeditionary Ship after all - my working assumption - as well as whether or not my suspicion that Interstellar Guard rank is based on Air Force, rather than Naval precedent fits the setting as it develops.
IUES is "Interstellar Union Exploratory Ship," I think? Been a while.

I think the officer ranks went something like Field Marshal > General > Major General > Brigadier General > Commander > Subcommander > Lieutenant > Sublieutenant > Ensign. A quick check shows me no Sublieutenants made it into the book; we chose to ignore the one on-screen usage of "captain" for the Imperial Guard.

I'd rather read NEW Myriad Universe stories than follow-ups to any previously published stories. Just one readers take.
