A Superman-type movie doesn’t have the same draw as a Superman movie.
Shumacher doesn’t say that in this article. Plus at that stage Clooney’s main film roles had been in the likes of From Dusk Till Dawn and The Peacemaker, not exactly laugh-a-minute stuff.

What's being proposed is a black actor playing Superman, not a black Superman type film. It would be a Superman film.

No, you missed the point. What I'm saying is that for you and others, there seem to be areas of American life in which you cannot conceive of black people participating. No doubt there were and are, some areas of American life that have been cut off from PoC, it's just that there are far fewer of those areas than you are probably aware.
There is a real life precedent for Will Smith playing James West, that precedent is Bass Reeves. But I don't generally blame people for lack of education of American history (assuming you're American). We were all short changed to varying degrees in that area.

No, try to understand this; the reason I mentioned Bass Reeves is because he is a real life example of a black man who succeeded in doing a job you apparently think is unrealistic for a black man because of racism.
This might come as a shock to you, but in the articles I read about Reeves, racism wasn't even mentioned. It didn't have to be mentioned, EVERYONE knows he had to have faced racism, it was the late 1800's, but the point is, the racism did not prevent him from being hired, nor did it prevent him from performing the job spectacularly. He had to be spectacular, he was black. .

Marshall Reeves may be an outlier, but that doesn't negate the value of his story because it flies in the face of your apparent belief that a fictional character like "James West" is unrealistic if played by a black actor.
Bass offers proof that a black man could and actually did, overcome racism to do a job that you apparently think couldn't have been done by a black man.
I think gblews is saying is to deal with racism through example by showing the world through example of how the world should be as oposed to how it is. Basically the Kasidy Yates argument when Sisko had issues about using the Vic Fontaine progam on DS9. Some would call it the subtle aproach. Oviously you can get great art by being more realistic because that freedom is what created the golden age of tv but maybe escapism doesn't always need to go that deep. Especially in this day and age when you got a internet that like 24/7 on neverending social commentary. This modern shows and movies aren't just competing against each other but also a huge back catelog of old movies and shows but social media itself. So unless someone has a really enquie prospective that you can't get from a rerun or 20 minutes on twitter maybe it is okay for shows and movies to sometimes embrace the fun. Jason
