$185 million in 2022 is not the same as $185 mil in 2016
That said, Star Trek can be a tentpole, if it doesn't sacrifice character for pew pew.
Star Trek will never be able to compete with Avengers level action, but it could still hold it's own in theaters.

 

I think having a smaller budget, makes film makers more creative sometimes. The space station shots in Beyond added nothing to the story, I think I would prefer a leaner film at this point, a smaller, smarter film that is counter programming to the giant Disney films.

Look how money Joker made.

 

Yorktown had to be impressive, because it was a stand-in for Earth. It had to be huge with lots of lives at stake, so a bad guy with a grudge could try to commit mass murder.

Star Trek Beyond wasn't appreciably different from the first two films. I think audiences picked up on that.

 

I think leaner budget can be very effective when creating a good story.

Also, in this day and age where digital models are a thing, those could still be accessed and utilized.

 

It was so expensive though. If it was a giant DS9 like station, that would have worked for a fraction of the price. All you need say is, a lot of people live here and it serves its purpose.

In this sequel, I want the threat ( a villain or natural disaster) to be to an alien world that has nothing to do with Earth.

 

On TV? Yes, you could probably get away with it. But folks go to see these things for the spectacle involved.

I don't think we'll get anything appreciably different. Cutting Hemsworth's salary off of the books gives them more money for effects. I doubt we see a budget that drops below the $150-175 million dollar range.

 

I think this is great news. So happy to see the Kelvin timeline continue. Hopefully Tarantino’s ST will follow shortly after

 

Beyond should've cost less than ST09 : got rid of Yorktown..., plus the Swarm, Ent destruction, Franklin, Krall (and the 50 different alien makeups), and flying starlord Kirk

 

Then there's no movie.

 

Nobody is going to know or care...I certainly have no issue with a women directing, but I’m just as happy with a “white guy” directing.

 

I'm sure SJ Clark will land on her feet. That white man may find it impossible to get a Trek movie made in the current climate at Paramount. I'll seriously be surprised if this ever gets made.

 

Yes, but that work is already done, so it might not be as expensive this time around...maybe. Depends on what assets they want to use.

Rumors are that Paramount has financial issues, coupled with what could be a reorganization after the deal with CBS closes, this could be nothing more than legal bookkeeping. Keeping the licensing terms that were negotiated during the split by having a film "in production" until they know where they stand.

 

Imagine Star Trek made on a Joker budget. No Enterprise, the story picks up during shore leave on an Earth-type planet. The aliens are TOS-style parallel earth humans. The whole story is Kirk and Spock and a couple of the others briefly appear on a viewscreens or something.

As amazing as Joker is, it's kind of low budget doesn't quite fit Trek.

 

It may be more a case of her moving on after her STAR TREK 4 project got stuck in limbo. As I understand it, this is a whole new project with a whole new premise, so I'm not sure if that counts as her being on "replaced" since the new guy is making an entirely different movie. It's not as though he's replacing her on the Hemsworth time-travel TREK movie.

Still, it is a shame she didn't get make her STAR TREK movie . . .

Anyway there is a huge middle ground between a Joker budget and an Avengers budget, if last movie lost money due to a giant budget, shouldn't they go with a smaller budget this time?

 

It did. But it also used a bunch of sets and effects from The Motion Picture.

Should they or shouldn't they? Who really knows? People could catch wind of a diminished budget and decide it better to just wait for the film on home video.

I think the likely best course, is to find the best story possible, then budget accordingly.

 

Mind you, those were 1980 dollars. Heck, the original STAR WARS only cost 9 million or so, but would surely cost much more if filmed today.

 

It's only a matter of time with all these competing megafranchises until a big budget crossover happens. (Sony's got a deal with Valiant Comics, and with Bloodshot coming out soon, I can finally hope for a XO MANOWAR vs Iron Man movie..)

anyway, Doctor Who/Kelvin Verse seems the obvious crossover. It's worked in comic form a couple of times.
