Spoilers The Mandalorian | Disney+ | Streaming Nov. 12

I think the Mandalorian might be the most SW thing since SW. Sure SW has always been epic, but it was also inspired by formats of pulp sci fi that were episodic. Lucas made a movie that was still very episodic. The act breaks in the original film are the most distinct in all of cinema perhaps. And Act 2 on the Death star was definitely less about narrative thrust so much as showing the characters' bonding as they go form one exciting incident to the other .. which is Lucas trying to recapture something form the old serials. But since SW is now just epic big films ever since, that serialized film (while not entirely lost) has become a bit mitigated... yet with the Mandalorian you are getting short half hour episodes that, while connected, could seem to thrive on the fact that we have to wait a week to see what new pratfalls will happen next.. we are meant to wait a week to see what he might decide to do.. we are meant to wait a week to see if the adventure will continue as we expect or if he will have to do a side quest. I hate to say it.. but maybe SW is more suited now to streaming and this half hour format than it was to big films after the first couple of films were made.

Hell, I wish they'd DO an old style 'cliffhanger' ending for one or more of these 'The Mandalorian' episodes, maybe they actually will at some point...but given the way they've done the first two, I doubt it will happen.

Star Wars was already doing pretty well in the serialized half hour format with The Clone Wars and Rebels.
Thinking about it, The Mandalorian really doesn't feel that far off from one of The Clone Wars multipart storylines. Granted some of that might have something to do with Dave Filoni being involved.

Fair enough.
But to see it in live action is something that is really neat. George was trying to bring that stuff from the page to make it really tangible.. as a film. And now to see that television live action can do what he had never dreamed of in the 70s is really something to see.

True, but having cliffhanger type stories doesn't mean they need to end with actual cliffhangers.. it might be enough that it's going from one danger to another worse, or at least different, danger throughout each episode. That style is something love.

I mean seriously. STar Wars was originally marketed to 12 year old boys. Eventually, because the story is timeless and universal, people of other demographics liked it. They did not cater to a politically correct demographic just for sake winning points with those groups. As soon as they do that, they just squander whatever inspiration they might have. And the evidence for that is right in their faces.

I mean now with Disney Star Wars they had a female lead in three of the four films, but they can't stop complaining about in justice.

The Empire sacked worlds and took slaves.

That's whatty-you callit? Bigotry.

Not on youtube. Weird.

On a more relevant note, it's amazing how one little thing can humanize a character. Here is a character that is in a mask and barely talks, so all the usual things like facial expressions are not tools they can use.. just well delivered sparse dialogue and good performance in head and body movement.

And mud. I mean really.. mud...it's so simple, but it's amazing how the scene where he gets covered in mud humanizes this character. Most of us knows what it feels like to covered in mud, to struggle while being utterly filthy . And it really gives us more to relate to in this character than we've had in like a long time in Star Wars.

Nineteen minutes is the current expected length for a sitcom. The current expected length for an epic drama is 1+ hours, and if you are going to be doing significantly shorter that need to be made clear in the advertising.
Game of Thrones is the current epitome of an epic drama. Only 17 of the 73 episodes were longer than an hour. There was even a 49 minute episode in Season 7. It averages out at about 59 minutes an episode. There is no expectation for any TV show to last more than an hour, unless it has been advertised as such (e.g. reality competition shows which often fill a 2-hour timeslot).
