The Down Under Lounge

^^^ The whole of Mainland Australia. Once again Tasmania, where it did actually rain, was excluded from being a part of Australia.

Bettina Arndt twittered the following along with a photo of a firefighter -

“Our media is full of images of brave men fighting the ferocious fires. As always, it's usually men who do the really dangerous, difficult work protecting everyone else. Give thanks for the good in men”.

It seems that the person in the photo she posted was actually a woman. 25% of the New South Wales Rural Fire Service volunteers are women and many of those women are on the front lines fighting the fires.

so wow .. you guys need rain .. that is difficult .. how are things down there?
You have no idea. I took a road trip a few onths ago. Plant litter is crumbling into dust. Dust. Dust everywhere. We need so bad it's way past that.

WTF happened to her? She used to be a smart, articulate feminist that talked about sex issues in interesting ways. I no longer recognise her.

And THIS is a must read!

PS: the mainland east coast is burning.

Tasmania’s turn will probably come in January/February. The rain we are currently getting will only encourage spring growth. We are have been told that early next year our conditions will be almost as bad as the conditions were just before the big 1967 bushfires. We had four bushfires burning earlier and have already had two days of high fire danger. If even Tasmania is getting high fire danger days this early it just shows how bad climate change is getting.

Yeah I have to say that too. I just read Bettina's comments again and have to wonder what changed with her? That just doesn't sound like any thing she's said in the past.

I HATE THAT SOME OF THESE FIRES HAVE POSSIBLY BEEN DELIBERATELY LIT.

Arsonists should get 10 life terms.

I don't believe in the concept of "an eye for an eye" at all - to put it as politely as possible. However, anyone who deliberately lights a bush fire - particularly on days of total fire bans and / or in the sort of atrocious conditions we've seen here in recent days - should have everything they possess gathered together and burned. They should be left with nothing. See how they like it. I have zero tolerance and utter contempt for such people. They have no excuse and deserve no sympathy.

Life term in jail with no parole ever

It seems that one of the arsonists is a teenager. Police have said that the 16-year-old boy has not been charged with arson, but will be dealt with under the state’s Youth Justice Act.
