I predict it ended not too long after Voyager returned to the Alpha Q.

Seven reminds me someone else here, who is married to her carrier.... Kathryn Janeway. That's why, I always thought that even if she had accepted Chakotay's long courtship, at the end, the latter would have always arrived second after Starfleet, while he wanted to be her everything like she was his.

Sometimes I think there's something a little shaky about Janeway and her relationship with Mark.

Besides another thing, there's an episode from the 7th season where Chakotay time travels to the past and meets the past Janeway before she even meets Chakotay, the Maquis or the rest of the crew.

They have some adventures where they try to fix the timeline.

    At the end before he returns to the present;

JANEWAY: Mind if I ask you one last question?
CHAKOTAY: Will I have to break the Temporal Prime Directive to answer it?
JANEWAY: Maybe, just a little. For two people who started off as enemies, it seems we get to know each other pretty well. So I've been wondering. Just how close do we get?

This is the Janeway that's still engaged to Mark.

In the lap of squalor I assure you.
Past Kathryn wanted Future Chakotay to say that in the future the two of them were doing it, which is not cheating.

Not trying to put words in her mouth, but the sound of it was suggestive.

And then look how quick she deleted that holo-character's "wife" before she ended up sleeping with him.

You're right, Mark was not in better position than Chakotay (I'd even say that his position was worst as seeing as a few weeks or months after her fiançée have left him for a mission, she flirted with someone else... even if I remain convinced that she would have not cheated on Mark but well, just this detail could show a certain desire not to be locked up by anyone in a romantic relationship) .So, no matter who (= male suitor) would have tried to pursue Janeway, he would have been in second position after Starfleet AND her family/dogs.

Katey found out about Mark remarrying in Hunters which is half way through season 4. The Fairhaven episodes came much later.

There's no reason to believe that Mark and Kathryn didn't have an arrangement, about when their fidelity goes on hold, because this can't have been the first ship thought lost that came back regardless.

Sleeping with Chakotay? I don't think so. But the Irish guy, yes. ;) Although she never confirmed what she did with him when they were alone.

That was the episode where the doctor told her that it was immoral and illegal to sleep with her crew, so with the rare exception of a fly by night alien, her only real option for a lover was a holographic one.

The Doctor was volunteering to be her sex buddy, but she didn't get the subtext because he's bald.

In shattered, she basically learned that her relationship with Mark was going to end.

I don't remember much from that episode, but in that scene she seemed really interested if she and Chakotay were going to be an item. After all she brought it up herself, and against the temporal directive thing. She didn't seem too thoughtful about Mark.

It's been said before, but Trek is pretty bad with relationships. Idk, no sense of chemistry, affectionate body language, coldness-- the only ones I really got were Worf and Dax, and maybe Sisko and Kasidy. And maybe a couple of others.

But ones like Worf and Toi seem just like Chakotay and Seven. Even the novel had Ro Laren with Quark lol.

There's another episode early in the first season where they find a culture that had some type of projector that could possibly send them home. They were also hedonists.

Janeway seemed to be getting cozy with the leader guy--even Seska commented on it.

Where I work has had some really crazy things happen, like a VP marrying a stock room clerk, so none of this phases me. Ro Laren is a non-character. Why even bring her up? And the novels are 99.999% CRAP.

    It's what happened.

20 year old out of context memories.

I definitely thought that this conversation was from before she met Michael, where the Doctor was making a play for Kathryn, but its from later when the Doctor was affirming that Michael was a good bloke, and she should get lost in his eyes, and sail away with him.

    My bad.

Chakotay knew some pretty intimate knowledge about her and even told her that she lent him her precious Dante. I'd be curious

I NEVER took that seriously. In fact that almost ruined my faith in novels. It's not the odd pairings, it's the lack of perceived chemistry.

I don't know why, but Trek romances tend to come off as either cold or forced. That just how it looks, which may be why some fans feel that it does romances badly.

I can accept Dax and Worf, because they're almost like two peas in pod. And they brought out things in each other. I can accept Sisko and Kasidy because they looked cute together, and took it all the way to the alter, even though I still got slight coldness vibes sometimes.

BTW, novel wise, "The Never Ending Sacrifice" may be one of the best DS9 Novels out there.

I never had a problem with any of the ST pairings, because like I said, many real-life pairings are odd. I didn't even know it was something I was supposed to second-guess. I know another couple where the husband is a 45 year old little boy who converses like a potty mouthed 12 year old, but you can crack a walnut up his serious wife's arse.

I used to read a lot of the TOS novels back in the day. I had them all, I truly liked only 3 or 4 of them.

One of them, Spock fathered a son when he and McCoy was stranded in the ice age of that planet. Spock sees present day clues that he left a son, so Spock uses the Guardian to go back and bring his son back to present day. This one was so good, I had hoped they would make it into a movie.

Another one I remember had Kirk and Spock back in the time of dinosaurs, and one of the writers was a paleontologist. Loved that one, too.

But most of them, the characterizations are so off that they are not fun for me to read.
