What? That is not the context of the usage of "random" here. In this context "Random" implies that there were no grounds for the sequence of events either from the perspective of Chakotay, or the writers.
Random: made, done, happening, or chosen without method or conscious decision; odd, unusual, or unexpected.
Because we saw only a fraction of their time on Voyager, we should have no expectations of what is "likely". We do not have enough information to decide what seems "unusual" because of our lack of data.

Like real life?So, it is completly normal that 2 people who spent almost 4 years to avoid each other (quite simply because they could not stand each other) while living on the same vessel, finally decide to date after having spent 2-3 weeks of (forced) collabaration?! I'm pretty sure that friends/colleagues and relatives would not see it as well At worst, it's suspicious (there's a hidden reason from one of the parties in the presence to this sudden abrupt turnaround like trying make someone jealous in order to push her/him to react) At best, it's ridiculous, especially when people do not know what they will become (= we do not make empty promises to someone who is quite sensitive and inexperienced to loving feelings and who will basically take what is said to her/him at face value)
This displays a profound lack of insight into human nature. The opposite of love is not hatred, it is apathy or indifference. Apathy/Indifference means lack of interest, concern, or sympathy. Strong feelings can invert very quickly. It's why people once in love hate each other. People who hate each other can flip just as quickly. My best friend of 50 years, who I've seen at least once a week, is someone who moved into my neighborhood when we were kids, and I hated him for years. Until we were the only ones each other knew on the first day of 7th grade.
If the age gap between Chakotay and Seven posed a problem at that time (while both were human), the situation will be the same and even more complex between Seven and the Doctor, knowing that the latter is a hologram. I mean, even if the Doctor decided to alter his age to better seduce Seven, the physical appearance of Robert Picardo will not deceive anyone. He is getting old and it shows like the nose in the middle of the face!

Because he's still a god looking forty year old "man" and she is horrified that somehow she is over 50, and her hot lay Chuckles is in his 70s kicking his prostate around when he walks about in a loose robe.

Honestly aside from his hair being gray, Picardo doesn't look that different from the 90s. His face isn't that wrinkly, he hasn't put on much weight, and it's hard to get any balder than he was at that time.
Some hair dye and minor digital retouching to smooth out his skin (less than Spiner is having) and he would pass for his Voyager character pretty well.

The Doctor/Robert Picardo I saw in Renegade was tired and worn. It was pathetic and sad, especially after to have seen him so alive for 7 years.
That being said, regardless he is older or rejuvenated, it is still NO to Seven/The Doctor as a romantic couple.

It was all the woman could do just to survive. Poor thing was stuck on a ship full of yentas (Gotta do this, gotta do that, gotta learn how to date, etc.).
You bring up an excellent point -- holograms aren't supposed to age.
Picardo is in the same position as Spiner.

Yeah, I know. My point is that Picardo has aged less since VOY than Spiner has since NEM, and it would be relatively easy to de-age him.
If he's still married, the Doctor should want to look similar to her age.

It's hard to take Chakotay seriously as a romantic interest for anyone when he's just spent 7 seasons method acting as an inanimate object. Also Chakotay barely tolerated Seven of Nine and treated her like she was a casual work acquaintance he bumped into in the lift for 3 years

Well, Kira never showed any interest in Odo until she did. Chakotay/Seven is less about Chakotay, than it is the culmination of 3 or 4 seasons of Seven's experimentation with social interaction.
Kira and Odo at least made sense thematically as there had actually been build up to them getting together. They also had an established friendship which made their inevitable relationship believable. Chakotay and Seven barely said anything to each other for 4 years and then bam relationship. A forced romantic relationship was a really unrewarding way to culminate Seven's development.

I always liked Chakotay, but I do kind of think they were kind of thrown together. Apparently a lot of viewers think they were thrown together.
Ok, maybe its the appearance that they were thrown together. The show kind makes it look that way.
I'm used to seeing a character show some type previous attraction and interest before they eventually become a couple, I don't remember really seeing that.
By that I mean Chakotay looking her up and down, and Seven doing the same. Flirting behavior maybe. Warming up. Show some normal attraction gestures.
But then again I have a vague memory of some Voyager episodes around this time. Just an impression that it was sudden and out of the blue--gimmicky. If I see it again, maybe I'll have a different take on it.
