Does anyone actually say this phrase with any degree of seriousness these days though?
God, I hope not.
So Terminator Dark Fate failed at the box office.. a reskin of the other Terminator films.. it had nothing ewn to say, no real story to it at bottom. And yet it was propagated into existence by films like The Force Awakens, a reskin of a New Hope which also had nothing to say, and succeeded wildly because it was a sequel to the greatest franchise and a lot of people wanted to know what would happen next.. but many were distraught (though some were content) with the retread familiarity of the story.
Because Terminator, at its core, is an incredibly limited concept.
Some were discontent with the familiarity of The Force Awakens, yet many of those same folks were pissed at the lack of familiarity in The Last Jedi. So Disney is never going to win, any way they slice it.
And honestly, maybe, MAYBE, one out of those fifteen is actually a decent, original and interesting story.
Not if we're judging by the ideas I've seen on this board over the years!

no they just want a well made movie that honored the franchise. Not a convoluted mess with moral grandstanding, awful humor, subplots that went nowhere (in fact the movie was all subplots), terrible characters.. etc
I didn't see anything in The Last Jedi that dishonored the franchise.
I believe that Luke Skywalker had the most fascinating of any character arc in any Star Wars film to date. I think the film has flaws. I think the lesson of the film that failure is the greatest teacher, is an important one. I think the idea that a legend even in death can outdo the man in the living is one of the best things that Star Wars has done. I think that a lot of issues that people had with The Last Jedi was that it challenged many fans' preconceived notion of what Star Wars could be all about. I won't say its perfect, because even I think Canto Bight could have been better. But I think its far better a film than people give it credit for. If you can get past the incorrect notion that Luke Skywalker was some sort of a loser who died for no reason. Not accurate. Not at all.
Yeah, lack of familiarity was the constant complaint I read around TLJ.
There is nothing in TLJ that "dishonored" this franchise.
I've been watching Star Wars since 1977. I'm not as big into it as I am Star Trek, though I am a fan of the Skywalker story. I'm just really confused when some brings "honoring" into the conversation? What exactly did these last two films do to dishonor the original creation?
I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this particular subject so I can understand. Hopefully they use small words, because I'm kinda dull.
I'd say the greed with Star Trek has been almost worse than Star Wars at times. The only reason IDIC is even a thing is so Rodenberry could sell shit with the symbol on it, and I've seen them sell Star Trek stuff at way higher prices than the exact same thing without Star Trek involved. I understand they probably have to spend more to make the stuff with all the licensing fees, but I swear there were times where the Star Trek version of something was almost 2x the price of the non-Star Trek version of it.
Then I guess it's a good thing we didn't get any of that in TLJ.
Other than the fact that TLJ actually forced people to think of solutions to problems other than violence, it was also a beautiful movie! It captured the look of the other movies, while making things look... better. I hope Rian Johnson gets a shot at his trilogy! (Though I doubt he will)
It's called Star Wars .. not Star sit around and meditate.
ANH indicates otherwise. It has action but also has a lot of sitting around and meetings.
