That doesn't surprise me. He always struck me as a giant asshole. Of course he instituted drug tests.

Aren't the writers, who haven't signed exclusive contract independent contractors? Can you force people like that to take drug tests?

I suppose you could make it one of the terms of the contract. It wouldn't be forced then, since they could just decline to sign the contract if they weren't willing to accept the terms.

I guess that makes sense, but it still like kind of a strange thing to but in a writer's contract.
Obviously drugs are bad, but it's not like writers are going to be in situations where being high would put people in danger, or some other situation where drug use would have a negative impact.

Conservatives have long used drugs and morality as an excuse for authoritarianism and crackdowns on groups they disapprove of. The Nixon and Reagan administrations' wars on drugs were conscious covers for the persecution and harassment of racial minorities and left-wing groups. In this case, I'd imagine the target is the supposed liberal elites of Hollywood. Or maybe it's just authoritarianism for its own sake, which seems to be synonymous with "conservatism" in the US these days.

...and its their right to request screening (the nature of some sensitive and/or dangerous positions make that necessary) just as its the right of the potential employee to refuse and move on.

His fears were actually well founded. According to Rob Liefeld, he and many of his artistic peers from that period (like Jim Lee for example) were heavy into drugs as a means to meet looming deadlines.

YES! Now, we might get Marvel cartoons that are actually good again, as opposed to the crap they've been putting out since canceling Spectacular Spider-Man, Avengers: EMH and Wolverine & TXM. Loeb is the reason all the Marvel cartoons went totally brain dead (well, there were other people too, but from what I know he was a bit part of the terrible "style" the Marvel cartoons have had for the last several years), right as Marvel cartoons were showing they could be as good as DC's good stuff. We obviously won't be getting any of the old shows back, but something that at least has a bit of effort to it would be nice. Loeb definitely had a "cartoons are just dumb things for little kids" mentality, so anyone would probably be an improvement over him in the position he held.

Not just in the Leifeld era; from the late 1960s through the 80s, a sizable number of most famous artists and writers had used drugs, including Steve Englehart, Alfredo Alcala, Roy Thomas, Frank Brunner, and too many to list here. Alcala had gone on record and described how prevalent it was among comic book creators during the 70s, and it was not pretty--the total opposite of the happy-go-lucky "bullpen" packaged to fans.

Wow. I was actually going to make a joke about the stereotype of artists using drugs, but I thought it was a bad stereotype I didn't want to play into. Guess it was more true than I thought.

Could be fun, although I always get a bit nervous when they cast non-actors for this kind of stuff.

Well, it's The Simpsons. They haven't been good or even relevant on this side of the millennium.
