I don't think it's snobbish to regret that netflix, maybe amazon, maybe hulu would be the main distributors of artsy and dramatic films, that the older type of distribution and release die out and people have to spend monthly for a channel to have access, let alone that that whole kind of film should die out and artists should have to instead turn their ideas into television series.
I think you have hit on a point here. It is not the MCU or Blockbusters that are killing off the distribution of smaller, low-effects style films. In many ways it is the technology available. I am going to enjoy The Irishman a lot more on my 70" Samsung and decent sound system on my comfortable sofa than I am in a theatre for 3.5 hours. In fact, most of my life I have watched movies on television--I was a Blockbuster kid. I will now spend money on spectacle films and enjoy the smaller films through streaming. I still rent films I want to see when they are available, and my tastes for other types of films have not changed.
