I don't think so. Decker says he's playing devil's advocate a lot of the time, so it's hard to know what he would've done in the big chair, but if he'd raised shields outside of the cloud, it probably wouldn't have made any difference. He might've loitered around outside the cloud longer, but once they got into V'Ger, there's a good amount of waiting around until they get to Earth, so as long as he went in at all, they probably would've been reeled in and ended up inside the outer chamber.

The real question is, would he have tried to pump the Ilia probe for information without Kirk ordering him to (since his personal connection with her is the only thing that made that work), and would he have had the big space stones to bluff V'Ger and say he knew who the Creator was and why it wasn't responding to the radio signal? I say fifty-fifty on the former, and definitely not on the latter. Decker was too conservative to paint himself into a corner that way.

It was kind of crappy how Kirk arrogantly pushed aside Decker in order to take over the center seat. I suppose it might have been an odd way to reintroduce a beloved character after so many years.

I think the "Stop competing with me, Decker!" scene was meant to be viewed as Kirk redeeming himself for his initial arrogance. Kirk had to eat some humble pie, with his phaser order countermanded by Decker. Kirk brought Decker to his quarters to chew him out, but it wound out that it was really Decker who chewed Kirk out by telling Kirk, to his face, that Kirk's unfamiliarity with the refit Enterprise seriously jeopardized the mission.

Kirk acknowledged that he needed Decker to "nursemaid" him through these difficulties. Of course, McCoy piled on. He basically reinforced what Decker said. Kirk was humbled.

Later on, there was another scene where Kirk and Decker's difference was brought to the fore. This time Kirk was quick to admit that he was wrong with the memorable line "I stand corrected" and a smile to Decker. By that point in the movie, Kirk's arrogance towards Decker had largely been diminished. I guess Kirk could be seen as having mostly redeemed himself with regard to Decker.

At the very end, both men got what they wanted. A happy ending. :)

It does feel like McCoy's only real role is to bitch Kirk out. I mean, the moment Bones is back in uniform, he's climbing up Kirk's ass. "You're pushing. Your people know their jobs." "There are casualties, my wits! As in frightened out of, Captain sir." "It's an obsession!"

Maybe he's pissed about being drafted, but just about all he does is complain and make wise-assed comments. Most of the actual medical stuff seems to be done by Chapel. To be fair, this is primarily what Bones does in the films. Very rarely are his medical skills taxed.

To be fair, he did this a lot in the show as well.

I wish the Director's Cut had restored the full argument between Kirk and McCoy in Kirk's quarters. It left out some of the best bits, like this:

    McCoy: And another thing....
Kirk: Get out of here, Bones.
McCoy: As ship's doctor, I am now discussing the subject...of COMMAND FITNESS.

    I completely agree.

That exchange was far less stilted than the scene opening with Bones and McCoy already stiffly facing each other in a double shot. I was actually surprised when the Director's Cut missed that one.

There are a couple places within the Director's Cut where I would have spliced differently. Even though I believe overall that it is a much improved version of the film, and really hope Paramount decides to go ahead with a 4k remastering of it.

And yet it was in "In Thy Image", to an extent, written long before Wise joined TMP's production team.

Looks like it took $346,243 in it's re-release - not a bad figure for such a limited release.

Interesting...do we know how this compares to some of the other Fathom re-releases?

I'd be curious just in comparison with their Wrath of Khan release of a couple years back. I assume not, since that one got an encore showing the following Thursday (and if that happened here, it happened faster than I blinked). Mostly I wonder if it did well enough to convince Paramount there is a demand for remaking the director's cut in 4k.

Both times I went to see TWOK it was a fuller audience than when I went to TMP. But that's what I expected. TWOK is like the Citizen Kane of Star Trek movies.

No, TWOK is the Casablanca of Star Trek movies. TMP is the Citizen Kane.

I wanted to go to this screening but didn't get a chance. I did see the movie in theaters back in 79 and it was an awesome experience. It is still the most enjoyable time I have had watching a Trek movie and as a result TMP is still my favorite Trek movie.

The visual effects and Goldsmith music blew me away, and I was totally absorbed in the story. And of course it was great to see the beloved characters and starship after so many years. Also loved the old style playing of preamble music before the curtains opened, something that s not done anymore. I was a Trek fan before but became a hardcore fan after seeing TMP.

Thank you for all of the replies. It did not show here in New Brunswick, Canada. Does anyone know if it will soon be shown in the Fredericton, Saint John, or Moncton areas? Thanks.

I believe all of the dates have passed, most Fathom events are usually very short engagements of only a few days.

I might suggest calling or googling your local theaters to find out.

No Star Trek film rates comparison to either of those films.

Yet I'd watch most trek films over either of them.:techman:

You're on a Trek focused message board. Is this supposed to surprise anyone?
