The unnecessary reboot/remake of the week thread

This new BSG project isn't a reboot/remake, as per Sam Esmail himself.

What exactly it IS hasn't yet been defined, but people calling it a reboot isn't accurate.

The Sony CEO says people who he won't name have approached him about remaking..... The Princess Bride.

If it hasn't been defined, then you don't know if it's a reboot or not, regardless of what Esmail says. Undefined means undefined.

If, however, it comes out and tells the same story all over again, that would pretty much settle the question, wouldn't it?

How can you remake the perfect movie?

After watching the first 3 seasons of Mr. Robot and hearing Esmail talk about movie and TV production, I am ready to give anything he does a try.

But BSG? This is one of my all time favorite dramas. To me, the show was perfect. If Sam can improve on this, or even equal it, he truly is a genius.

Reboots are a Hollywood tradition since they set up home near Beverly Hills in 1912. Give it time and Gone with the Wind might make a comeback.

Regarding THE PRINCESS BRIDE:

Lots of novels have been adapted to film multiple times. Heck, we're getting a new "Little Women" any day now.
What's wrong with adapting "The Princess Bride" again?

There's no rule that says that there can be only one definitive movie version of any given book.

BSG 2004 is a mess. Maybe something similar but with an actual plan, and thought out ideas. But Mr. Robot is amazing so I have hope. Plus they said it's not a remake. It could very well be set in the same universe on our current Earth.

But BSG, Hogan's Heroes, Save by the Bell, Punky Brat-ster. I mean they are remaking Hanging with Mr. Cooper, no one but me even remembers that show.

I remember the pilot episode. It didn't even have a set of its own yet, so they had to use the Growing Pains set, and they even had an Alan Thicke cameo.

Normally, I would agree with you. But: The Princess Bride.
There are no rules BUT FOR THIS ONE MOVIE.

I loved the book, which I came to first. Liked the movie well enough, but it's not as good as the book, IMO.

There's always room for a new interpretation of a classic property--like a cool new cover version of a old standard. I mean, it's not as though we retired "Over the Rainbow" after Judy Garland sang it, even though her version is sublime. Subsequent performers have put their own spin on it, sometimes to good effect.

Heck, half the fun of watching a new version of an old production is seeing how different actors interpret the same role.

Oh, I know. And I agree. And normally, I would be saying the same thing. Art is there to be reinterpreted.

My “one movie they should never remake” is Die Hard but OTOH, I wouldn’t mind seeing a new take on the source novel, Nothing Lasts Forever, in which the hero is older and is visiting his daughter, rather than his wife. Ironically, Bruce Willis is probably about the right age for that role now...
