Sorry for a n00b question, but.... After some time away from Voyager I started to wonder, was it ever mentioned how many Maquis members joined Voyager's crew in the beginning? Obviously they were onboard Chakotay's ship in 'Caretaker', they just didn't appear on screen, if I remember correctly. I'm few episodes into season 2 and in the end of season 1 Tuvok tried to get some Maquis members to behave. He chose few to be trained, how many more were there?
It was never mentioned. Rule of thumb is 25 percent. (140 /4 = 35. Too much?) Which makes up for the "real" crew that Kathryn lost getting to the DQ. I'm wondering if you married a Maquis, if you became a Maquis?

Around 1/3 of the crew. That's why I always thought that the Maquis had no chance to make an eventual revolt work aboard. Of course, some of them were violent by nature and then, they had Chakotay as leader but facing them, there was 2/3 of men and women disciplined and having received a minimum of military training (meaning that they knew how to fight) and Janeway as leader (assisted by a Borg, a Vulcan and brillant minds).
We're told exactly how many in season 7's "Repression." First, Chell says CHELL: "Maybe it's a conspiracy. Ever since Voyager began sending datastreams back home, Starfleet has known that almost a quarter of the crew is Maquis" Then, later in the episode, Chakotay says- CHAKOTAY: "There are still twenty three of our former comrades who aren't with us yet. I was hoping you'd be able to help persuade them." So, 23 plus the Maquis Tuvok already got to, which were Tabor, Yosa, and Jor, plus two other unnamed- JANEWAY: "Five crewmen in comas and we don't have a single clue?" Tuvok then gets to B'elanna and Chakotay. That makes 7 Maquis Tuvok brainwashed. Add that to Chakotay's "23 former comrades" still not brainwashed. There were exactly 30 former Maquis on Voyager by season 7. 31 if you include Tuvok.
I think Voyager had about 144 people aboard in the past season. A quarter of 144 is 36, so Chell's "almost a quarter of the crew are Maquis" works out rather nicely. You could probably figure out how many Maquis had died by that point with enough digging. There was Seska, Hogan, Jonas, and Lon Suder. That makes at least 35 on Chakotay's Maquis ship in Caretaker(with Tuvok)
Basically not a threat for a possible mutiny; simply padding the walls for Janeway to be the grand Captain of all Captains without the obstacles nor the consequences of being in alien space with no allies, an obedient balls-less 1st officer who could never challenge her in any silly decision she made throughout the series. What the series could've been if the odds were even where there were as many Maquis as Starfleet personnel? Stranded in a foreign galaxy would have to inject compromises or chaos would happen frequently. Such a missed opportunity to not attempt a sub-culture on Voyager; there was a lot of potential stories to be told looking at different facets of the Maquis, and that doesn't mean it has to be the ridiculous and idiotically extreme mindset like the 1 dimensional villain Seska.
I don't think the exact number was ever mentioned. However, we know that the number must be greater than those shown onscreen. However, it can't have been a great number because the ship fit inside Voyagers shuttle bay, and the crew capacity of Voyager was around 150. So, all things said, I reckon it would be about 10-15 people altogether. I could be wrong of course, but that's what makes sense to me.

I disagree with your comments about Chakotay. He was more than just a yes-sayer to Janeway. I think that both he and the Maquis members on the ship realized that they were too few to take over the ship and that the best way, maybe the only way to come home was to cooperate with the Starfleet crew.

It's a Matrilineal Descent type thing. You're automatically Maquis if your mom is Maquis. Have pity for poor Miral Paris.
Euh, Tuvok was NEVER a member of Maquis, even brainwashed. He only simulated his condition to better deceive Chakotay (remember when the latter ordered Tuvok to shot Janeway as a loyalty sign. Tuvok obeyed until it was time to shoot. That's at this time, he slightly deflected his shot to reach Cakotay instead of Janeway.
