USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

This is the way I picture it:

If Fuller wanted each season of Discovery to take place in a different era with a different set of characters, then it was only going to stay in the TOS Era for one season. He wanted it to look as much like TOS as possible. If that didn't go over well, then no big deal because the next season wouldn't be like that because it wouldn't take place then.

Then people above Bryan Fuller said, "We don't want to do all that! It sounds expensive! Set the show in one time-frame with one set of characters. Just stick with Kirk's time." Then Bryan probably said, "Okay. Not a problem. This is what I want to do. This is how I want it to look." Then CBS probably said, "No! You can't do that!" Then Bryan might've replied with, "But I thought you said you wanted the TOS Era." To which CBS would reply, "We want our own version of Star Trek. The Abrams Films are hot. The TOS Era is where it's at! But they updated the look! We want you to update the look too! But make it look different from the update JJ Abrams did!" Then Bryan might've said, "Okay, but..." CBS getting frustrated might've said, "Stop arguing. This is what we want you to do. Go ahead and make it happen!" Then Bryan might've replied with, "But isn't that a reboot?" CBS getting annoyed would say, "No! We're doing the Prime Universe! That's what makes our Star Trek separate from Paramount's Star Trek!" Bryan muses, "But if it's not the same, then it's a reboot!" CBS snaps, "IT'S A VISUAL REBOOT AND IF ANYONE ASKS THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO TELL THEM!!!! Now get out of my office!!!!!" Then Bryan left. To fight another day. After which he left "to focus on American Gods."

This would explain CBS's point of view, what Bryan Fuller probably wanted, and what we ended up with and why.

I also like to think that's what happened, more or less.

Eh I don’t think that’s it at all. It was Fuller who wanted everything changed, not CBS.

You keep saying that. Where's the proof? And BTW, what other people said after the fact, without Fuller around to stand up for himself, is not proof. From what I understand, he did want to change the look of the Klingons (which was necessary to hide the fact that a certain character was actually not who we thought he was), but that's it.

Uh, yes? It completely matters, that’s the entire context of the tweet.

The context doesn't matter. Despite it being a joke as you say, people were still fooled into believing that those shirts had been made for DSC, and they weren't. Ergo, yet again, they were fake.

I once built a starship model and passed it off as a screen-used model as a joke. That doesn't change the fact that my model was fake or the possibility that someone saw pics of my model without knowing the context of my joke and assumed it was real.

A cool render

I could see the DSC Enterprise being a 'Phase II' like variant, between TOS and TMP, but not as a Pre-TOS design.

That pic only reinforces my opinion that the DSC Enterprise looks like another, older class of ship built between the NX-01 and the TOS Enterprise. Not to mention that the render does not accurately show the difference in scale between the two ships.

Beatuiful render. I personally like the Discoprise more now with this comparison because I can see where the TOS Enterprise was build up in between the two eras. So I see it as a variant that was added on to.

My only complaint about the render is that the DISCO enterprise is so dark (insert Disco lighting joke here). But, it's nice to see them side by side.

I've given up on the 'sIzE tHiNg" ...

I'm just going with the '66 Enterprise being bigger than was originally thought.
It's obvious to me that there's no going back on this now.
:sigh:

Except that's pretty much impossible with the difference in scale, unless CBS is now retconning the scale of the original TOS Enterprise.

I personally never understood the size complaint. We never had an official size from TOS-it just was the ship. It really only mattered when we had more of Star Trek and by then there wasn't a firm answer. So, we have a bunch of fanon answers.

Ok...I'm sure this is blasphemous or something but the size thing is a non-issue for me. It's not like we had a firm answer as to the size of the TOS Enterprise.

Going back to that link. (I, er, quoted the wrong post first...): This page got a nice update with new pictures.

And gosh dang! That concept art really looks beautiful. And IMO fits SO well into the TOS era! I really wish this was what was put on screen. Shame.

Far more interesting though: This artist also has many renders of Saru's earlier design:

Best of all: An animation of early concept Saru talking!

Looks fucking fantastic!
I previously only ever saw still pictures! But at the same time, it's very understandable (and IMO the right choice) that they redesigned it to a simple make-up. Doug Jones is still fantastic! But having a regular character be this bold a mixture of puppetry and CGI would have blown the budget entirely.

Edit: I quoted the wrong post first. I updated the text a little bit to reflect that.

That's actually Saru's cousin Faru.

When they were kids he had his eyes on everything and was always letting things go to his head.
His parent's constantly told him he took things to far and would rue the day.
Now he's considered the yellow-sheep of the family.
<snicker>

You uh, quoted the wrong post there.

And it was refined into the simpler TOS Enterprise.
I kind of see that. But, I figure it's more of a recognition of needing more machinery inside for easier access, rather than worrying about external access for repair. So, the paneling became smoother.

That was Jeffries original reasoning behind the smoothed look too.

I liked the DSC Enterprise's exterior as soon as I first saw it. The interiors are good too but I still think the bridge is too busy looking. I think it's a little over-designed. On the consoles you have the read-outs, then the larger monitors on top of them, then the flashing blinking lights, and then something else on top of those. It's not easy on the eyes. It's a bit of an information overload looking at it. At least from my perspective.

Isn't it a given, since the DSC Enterprise IS the TOS Enterprise now?
I cant see them ever going back to the smaller size now, why would they when a larger vessel gives them more options and space in the sets.

I like the new Enterprise, I see quite a few people having issue with it and feel its out of sequence design and technology wise, for me the ship that screws it up is actually the Shenzou, it sticks out like a sore thumb and doesnt really go anywhere.

Someone had a brain fart and thought it would be a good idea to have a ship that is upside down compared to all the others just to be different.

Remove the Shenzou and Starfleets ship design lineage flows much better.
