Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

Just got an email my tplana hath is on it's way. I always thought it was a flat ship, so I'll be interested to see it in person.

The Hathaway looks cool. Glad they are making that one.

And now that I heard the Charon was at one point considered to be a hollowed out planet killer, that's all I see when I look at her.

found this girl cheap on eBay:

incredibly flawed sculpt, but only noticeable from most angles.

I have a random question: Would the XL Eaglemoss Enterprise-A be in scale with the Diamond Select USS Excelsior? The online measurements for the Enterprise are at 10" long, and the Excelsior at 16" long. I'm asking because I'm looking for a refit Enterprise/Enterprise-A that is in proper scale compared to my younger brother's DST Excelsior model, so we can re-enact the scene from TSFS with him chasing me out of spacedock! LOL

Does anybody know if Eaglemoss has plans to produce more models of ships/stations from the Kelvin Timeline? Particularly the Enterprise-A since I love the design of that ship.

According to Memory Alpha, it looks like the only Kelvinverse model that might happen is "Starbase One" (listed under "Additional possible Special Editions identified on social media"). Considering the less-than-successful last movie, the merger between Viacom and CBS re-integrating the two timelines and the primary focus on Discovery, Picard and other new upcoming series on CAA, I'd probably view future Kelvinverse model considerations to be DOA, at least for the time being.

Ah I see, thank you for the information!

For the Enterprise-A, they were waiting for more news on the 4th Kelvin movie before going ahead, but the movie has since been cancelled. There might be another movie (the Tarantino one) that might be in the Kelvin universe at least in part, but with the merger anything can happen and it's all up in the air.

I decided to upgrade the nacelles of my XLsior by adding gray and black stripes. It still doesn't look like the original studio model of course, but at least it matches the DS9 CGI version a little better. I care more about the background Excelsiors from the Dominion War than about the actual USS Excelsior anyway.

Yeah I really wish they went with the original studio miniature dimensions with that one (and no engine lights). The secondary hull (based on the 1/2-scale Greg Jein model) was way too narrow. To be fair, though, he was said to have built it from photos alone without actually seeing the original. Not a bad job for eyeballing it, but you'd think they'd have found a way to give him access to the thing so he could build a more faithful replica.

I think the original mesh was like that, relying on ambient lighting to give it environment-based coloring. Honestly, lots of models, both CG and physical, look painfully boring IRL. Lighting is everything! :)

Another thing about the Excelsior(s): It seems to me that most people prefer Ed Giddings' CGI models (which as far as I can tell Eaglemoss used for the Enterprise B models, the rendered images inside the new XL Excelsior magazine, and all front cover images) over the older DS9 CGI model (which appears to be what was used for the renders inside the regular-scale Excelsior magazine, and for the actual EM Excelsior models). Now, at first glance they do look nice. His Excelsior, for example, tries to replicate the look of the original studio model and thus gets some shapes and texture details right that the DS9 model, being based on the smaller second studio model, doesn't.

However, after comparing the measurements of the different CGI models with photos of the original studio model (this one for example) I came to the conclusion that the proportions of the Ed Giddings models are very off. The secondary hull is about 10% too long and 15% too wide, making it look more bulky than it's supposed to. The saucer rim is too thin. The nacelles sit very low, directly behind the saucer, because the neck section is at least 25% too high while the nacelle struts are 15% too low.

The DS9 mesh on the other hand has a secondary hull that looks too pointed and slim when viewed from the front or bottom, and the saucer rim is rather thick. But apart from that I'd say its silhouette is much closer to the original studio model. Thus, after adding some more detail to the nacelles, I'm pretty happy with my XL Excelsior and I don't plan to buy the XL Enterprise B anymore.

glad you're happy with your XL excelsior.

i held off getting the XL B for a long time because i wanted the plain old XL excelsior. but i broke down and got the B a few months ago and now, after seeing all the photos online, i can't say i'm interested in the excelsior anymore. if they'd made a reasonably faithful replica of the search for spock or TUC ILM model, i would've be down, but i've never been a fan of the way she looked in her 90s TV form.

your blacked out nacelles does help things though.

Well, I got a neat surprise when I got up this morning. I was just getting out of bed when there was a knock on the door. I thought it was my caretaker asking for my lease renewal, but, to my surprise, the mailman had left me a package. I wasn't expecting this because the online tracker (which admittedly hadn't been updated in over a day) showed it in another city, but the four shpis I ordered from the Eaglemoss site finally arrived!

The Sternbach concept Voyager is an interesting ship. Like most of the longer, thinner ships in the series, the dimensions of the box necessitated a fairly small scale. I do think the final design they went with looks better as a "hero" ship that we'd be looking at each week. The bullet shaped primary hull, with a more pointed nose as actually more similar to the Prometheus and the Dauntless, which would come later. I don't know if the angular primary hull really fits that well with the boxy components on the top of the secondary hull. Also the nacelles almost look like they're upside down, with their flat tops and under-slung Bussard collectors. I know they always wanted part of the ship to articulate, but I wonder what they could've done with this ship.

I know study models generally weren't suitable for actual filming, but this would've made a nice background ship during the 6th and 7th season of DS9.

The Pasteur, the earliest in the series of the four models I got, well... they definitely didn't skimp on windows or escape pods on this one. The section with the nacelle struts looks a bit raised and, at first, I though they hadn't put it in place all the way, but the paint shows that it is. I like the duck egg blue color scheme it has. The only flaw Is a couple of strange markings on the right side of the secondary hull that almost look like a botched print of some letters (although there aren't supposed to be any letters around there). It's not a huge deal, so I won't be complaining to anyone (except you, I suppose.).

The Cheyenne class, along with the New Orleans I already have, are pretty much the only Wolf 359 models I actually like. It's nice seeing a TNG-era design with nacelles that look different than the ones on the Galaxy, Nebula, and New Orleans. (And yes, I know those were markers). Not much to say, other than it's a fun design and I'm happy to have it.

The one I was really hoping for was the Jem'Hadar battleship. The battle cruiser was actually the very first model I ever bought, so it's nice to come full circle. I was really blown away by the level of detailing on this one. I'm amazed they were able to do this much for a model in this price point (and I wonder if this had anything to do with why it came so late in the series' run). The only downside is the stand really isn't secure at all, so I'll have to be careful when moving it. Other than that, it's a terrific model that I'm really happy with.

Not sure what I'll get next, though I'm hoping for the Bonaventure and the Enterprise-F (the regular one, not the STO one) eventually.

^ Looks like the Scimitar will have a similar hull texture to the Valdore.

My Google-Fu is fail can anybody give me the link to the announcement they are making a Star Trek Online line of ships?

XL akira is finally available to pre-order (again) in the US. the images still have the USS thunderchild markings on the saucer, despite the fact that the models as shipped in the UK don't have it.
