It'll happen because Paramount are desperate right now.

They have a known writer/director maestro, who might even want Star Trek be the landmark full stop to his career.

They have residual rights to exploit through a feature-film.

As the original owner who lost the franchise in a split, they're probably sitting around seeing CBS's burgeoning slate of spin-offs mapped out over the coming years, and all the revenue that's going to be bringing them.

So yeah, until Tarantino falls out with them over issues in the script he won't budge on, it'll happen. I actually think he's a huge fanboy of the franchise and while R-rated for realism, I think he knows it's an existing universe where rules can be bent slightly, but never broken. Let him fun with that.

Noted, but saying it again every couple of pages probably won't make that any more likely.

With Tarantino talking about being done as a directed my skepticism has increased. I'll believe QT Trek when it's in theaters.

The Pulp Fiction aspect sounds like fun. If we combine with the rumours about Kirk Prime, Picard, the Nexus and the Kelvin crew, perhaps they'll all be doing their own thing with their own stories until they combine or crossover towards the end?

Also let me be the first to take "gangster element" literally and say the whole thing takes place on Sigma Iota II:lol:

"I get annoyed at Simon Pegg. He doesn’t know anything about what’s going on and he keeps making all these comments as if he knows about stuff. One of the comments he said, he’s like ‘Well, look, it’s not going to be Pulp Fiction in space.’ Yes, it is! [laughs hard]. If I do it, that’s exactly what it’ll be. It’ll be Pulp Fiction in space.

That Pulp Fiction-y aspect, when I read the script, I felt, I have never read a science fiction movie that has this s–t in it, ever. There’s no science fiction movie that has this in it. And they said, I know, that’s why we want to make it. It’s, at the very least, unique in that regard… There is a gangster element to what we’re doing with the Star Trek thing that works out pretty good.”

I hope it either isn't made or it isn't with the kelvin characters.

this guy isn't even a trek fan, he just is obsessed about Shatner (who honestly isn't this Oscar worthy performer)

TARANTINO: I’m a big fan of the show Star Trek. I really like it a lot, but my portal into that show is William Shatner. I love William Shatner on Star Trek. I love his performance as James T. Kirk. That is my connection. That is my umbilical cord. It’s why I like Star Trek more than Star Wars, because William Shatner’s not in Star Wars. I think it’s one of the greatest performances in the history of episodic television, of a series lead, and rightly so, because very few series leads have ever gotten the opportunity to play all the different wild, crazy things. “The Enemy Within” alone…

TARANTINO: So that’s why I actually really was so taken with JJ Abrams’ first reboot and how fantastic I thought Chris Pine channeled William Shatner. He didn’t go a serious actor-y way. He said, well no, I’m going to do my own thing. He’s playing the William Shatner version of Kirk and he’s doing a fantastic job at it. I mean perfect, frankly. And [Zachary] Quinto is perfect as Spock. Those two guys, they f*cking got it.

Chris Pine didn't play Shatner version of the character AT ALL. That is the frigging point. His comment makes no sense to me and is contradictory. The rest is just confirming me what I already knew and thus why him and this trek make no sense. It sounds like this trek is just a toy for him to destroy by making it look like his other movies.
If Paramount let's this happen they really don't care about trek at all and have no integrity. Again, at this point next time hire Almodóvar or Woody Allen too since you are at it. Why not? They don't make less sense than this guy.

On the plus side, Tarantino's talking about the Kelvin Universe cast in positive terms, in addition to his love for Shatner. There's obviously a reason why in both of those cases, and that's possibly because his film isn't drawing a line under anything that came before. Perhaps he's glowing about the actors he still wants the new film to include?

Oh QT I feel very odd now because reading that I pictured Tarantino channeling Trump.

Remember the other interview where he said it's a mistake JJ had to include Mccoy, Uhura and the other characters too, as he finds it annoying you have to give other characters something to do. He only liked the episodes that were all the more a Shatner solo show. I don't forget.

This guy doesn't care about this genre, the ensemble, space etc.. in short 90% of the stuff people watch trek for.
He is just a Shatner fanboy who wants to turn it all into pulp fiction in space. He has nothing to lose if he ruins it for those who actually liked these movies. The vibe I get is that trek is flawed for him because it's too sci-fi and optimistic. I mean, gangster?
    This must be a joke.

I find it discouraging, if not depressing, that this is everything the studio wants to have. They can't serioustly tell me that there aren't people in Hollywood who would be truly inspired by this trek and do something good with it and this great cast.

Yeah, I get the sense that Tarantino is more of a normie fan, someone who is not intimate with canon (i.e. forgetting the title of Yesterday's Enterprise) and missing some of the DNA that made Trek great. It's...concerning.

Kinda there with you. Paramount n CBS won't allow anything that will damage brand, IMO or hope.
Glad he wants to use Kelvin cast, or at least Pine n Quinto.
Hope not set in Kelvin universe so he can set characters his way.
Just keep JJ n Bad Robot away from actual production please

To play studio advocate for a moment, they may be more enthused by have Tarantino connected to the project, than all his ideas. The fact that Tarantino is taken with the Kelvin Kirk and Spock is mildly interesting to me because maybe (big maybe) there might be more Kelvin Trek. Or maybe Paramount will be willing to ask Abrams back after SW if this does well.

I'm not enthused. His comments are weird to me, but I'm curious at least...morbidly so, perhaps.
