That's honestly their best route. Merging in a parallel (not the FoX-Men) universe would be far too unwieldy. And having a massive population remaining a secret all this time just strains credibility in the x-treme. This gives them a very good reason as to why they weren't a major presence before while still (via the 198 or whatever small number they go with) easily allowing for any prequels or flashbacks.

 

Yeah, although I suppose if they were all activated 5 years previously, that doesn't really jive with Magneto's or Professor X's origins and would not really work but of course they might have been working quietly under the radar.

In X1, it appear that mutants were only recently rising in the international consciousness due to recent increases in numbers. Plus, nobody in power in the MCU seemed particularly aware of all the powerful sorcerers running around.

Using the snap would mean that most characters would have only manifested their powers 5 year ago so we're right back to novice teenagers with a dodgy team dynamic. I can get them apples at Fox.

Although, while they of course mention Deadpool, unless I forgot it, they don't seem to mention Deadpool 2, even though it's the franchise's highest-grossing movie (and, given the lack of 3D surcharges, probably the single most-attended, also)! And now that the Disney merger is complete, the future of Deadpool on film is a complete mystery...

 

Not that big of a mystery. It has been confirmed that the franchise will continue with Reynolds and that an R rating would be considered.

 

X-Men could've stopped with one movie, and satisfied me.

Everything else has felt cheap. Apocalypse is the closest to the feelings around that first movie.

 

Even the first movie feels a bit awkward, especially considering the plot boiled down to "Magneto has a machine that makes people into goo".

 

What about earning Rogue's gray hair?
Wolverine's humor--what do they call you? Wheels?
The moral pickle of getting mutants and humans to co-exist?
The war that Magneto and Senator Kelly seemed intent on fighting while the X-Men try to stop them?
Rogue running away and Wolverine's comfort of her?
Senator Kelly's redemption, proving to Magneto, that it would work?

This movie did it best. The machine was to make all world leaders mutant. The X-Men knew they would turn to goo. That's a mis-characterization.

 

Agreed the first movie was best, 2 was a lesser but still pretty solid and worthwhile follow-up, the rest very disappointing.

 

Nah, 2 was MUCH better than one, both production wise and story wise. Stryker was a far better human foil than Kelly (who was largely superficial).

 

X2 is still probably one of my favorite comic book movies although it's a lot further down the list than it used to be.

That's an excellent retrospective. Creators from two major X-men incarnation in the same room. Makes me miss the animated series. Hope their nostalgia pitch to disney to continue it succeeds.

 

I loved the dark, mysterious feel to the first one with low key powers and minimal flash bang wallop. If its combat scenes had more modern choreography it would probably be the number one for me but X2 did have a better plot and the opening scene with Nightcrawler was awesome. It just needed more of that at the end.

 

X-2, Logan, and Days of Future Past, are my favorites. The first one, First Class, and The Wolverine would be next.

 

I would really like to see a Sisterhood of Evil Mutants story line with Rogue taking out Captain Marvel.

This is definitely a possibility if/when Captain Marvel runs her course and they give her a break. It would probably also be around the time X-Men arrive in the MCU 5 or more years down the road. Yeah, Rogue with CapMarv powers seems inevitable...

On February 5, 2019, Lauren Shuler Donner revealed that X-Force, as well as the rest of the Fox Marvel films, were "on hold" until the Disney-Fox deal went through.​

Rob Liefeld, co-creator of both Deadpool and X-Force, believes the project is now dead as a result of the 20th Century Fox-Disney merger. In his words: "Pour one out for ol' X-Force. Victim of the merger. $800 million grosser easy."​

Given that an X-Force team movie might have felt more like a proper X-Men movie (albeit with swears and violence) than a flick in the vein of Deadpool 1, it's entirely conceivable that Disney might restrict the future of Deadpool to smaller, more contained stories. And, until Disney announces a release date, even a Deadpool 3 isn't a sure thing.

 

Rogue hasn't had the Ms Marvel powers for 20 years though.

 

Not that I'm anyone, but I have some Do's and Don'ts suggestions for future MCU X-men movies.

There's only one requirement: must incorporate the tension between mutants and non-mutants. It doesn't have to be front and center all the time, but it must be there in the background.

Strongly recommended:
* Leave out the school at first - maybe it's just me, but thinking back I don't think the school aspect has added all that much to the X-men movies, with the exception of XM2 and maybe First Class.

* De-emphasis/reimagining of Professor X and Magneto - I wouldn't be opposed to not introducing them at all for a while. In particular I wouldn't make them the de facto leaders of the opposing mutant factions from the start; new stories should have them rise up the ranks of the mutants.

Magneto's backstory needs rewriting: don't make him a direct survivor of the Holocaust, it ties the universe down too much. Next year will make it 75 years since the end of World War 2. That's about as far in the past as the end of the US Civil War was at the start of WW2. I would like to see the X-men be born of our contemporary world and its issues rather than those of a now-distant past.

* Incorporate the space aspects, but judiciously - full disclosure, I came to the X-men through the movies, so it was a real shock when I started looking at actual X-men comics (I was like Shi'ar Empire, WTF, haha) Obviously they cut all that out for the Fox movies, but the time is right to reintroduce it: MCU has successfully done the heavy lifting of establishing a universe beyond Earth, and I would hope a major theme of post-Endgame movies is humanity's reaction to aliens. This would add a nice new dimension to the mutant-human conflict. But I would not make the X-men akin to Guardians of the Galaxy.

This final one I have no real argument for except a gut feeling: contrary to some other opinions here, I would not reintroduce the X-men universe by way of a TV series. Maybe it's a reaction to the uneven quality of the Star Trek movies (not too bad for TOS, very uneven for TNG). Story wise it shouldn't be a problem, but my prediction is making X-men on TV first will hinder, not help, future box office.

 

The school is such a core concept of the X-Men that I really can't see not including it.

The people from Disney have repeatedly said that they will continue to do the Deadpool movies will continue the same way that they have been done by Fox. At this point I don't have any reason not to take them at their word, especially with how successful the first two Fox Deadpool movies were.

 

And That sonce it is Deadpool...you don't HAVE totally be in synch with current continuity. It will work for the DCFU's Joker movie right?
