In retrospect it probably would have been better post-TLS for Fox to have either done a complete reboot of the X-men movie universe, or carry on the story without most/all of the original cast. Ironically they ended up doing both to a degree: DoFP became a reboot, while the success of Deadpool at least hints at what could have happened with a clean slate contemporary X-men series. Instead they just muddled on. 
As much as I liked FC, it was going backwards not forwards, and we have lots of evidence of the 21st century generally not being kind to prequels. In addition, we got more of the same in terms of Prof X vs. Magneto and Wolverine.
I have no idea what to expect of an MCU X-men franchise, which is a good thing; I just hope any movies don't feel like MCU Film #30. IMO they need to change things up for all post-Endgame films or it's going to become real stale.
