Completely ignoring that! I have to update my old torpedo bay sometime soon, as when I built it I'd imagined two torpedo bays next to each other and labeled the port side bay as "2" with a starboard door leading to "1" (obviously, now that I'm much more familiar with the actual size of the exterior of the ship, two full-sized torpedo bays right next to each other won't fit realistically).

Perhaps when I do update my old torpedo bay, I'll just have a sign that says "TORP BAY" and instead of a number below it, I'll have the department logo for Weapons & Defense?

Got the large cargo bay door worked out tonight. Although the matte painting depicts 7 door panels per side, I've gone with 8 here, because the spacing worked better that way.

Ever wondered what they look like closed? :D

And on the opposite side, I've got an era-accurate UFP logo to greet incoming shuttlecraft

I'm sure it will get the Probert stamp of approval.

Albeit the UFP logo was never a fixture on much of anything starship until the TNG era if I am recalling correctly.

IIRC, the UFP logo is also used during the retina scan in TWOK.

That looks great. I really love that logo too. The UFP film logo always said to me, yeah we believe in peace, but we also carry a big stick. ;)

THANK YOU for using the TMP era UFP logo. Aside from the fact that I like it better, it made me itch when people would use the NG one.

Indeed! Less of an overview and more a comprehensive study :techman:

To be clear, this is the TWOK version of the logo, which was seen in the aforementioned "Retina Scan" and the flag laid over Spock's torpedo tube. The major difference between the TMP logos and the TWOK logos was the design of the olive branches. The layout and size of the stars were almost always different on every iteration we saw of the logo in the early films. Now that I'm saying this, I am making a mental note to create the TMP-accurate logo as well for the TMP versions of my sets.

Again, check out Bernd's site linked above and scroll down to the early films and you'll get a much better overview of the differences than I can give.

I like how the doors are oriented to form a sort of arch to push against the cargo area air pressure if the hangar is depressurized. Nicely done.

Yeah, cause that fire-extinguisher has gotta go for the TMP version. ;)

Are you going to implement the door that Andy Probert indicated closes over the airlock to isolate it from the cargo deck?

Wish I could take credit, but this was all how Probert designed it. I'm just fleshing it out in 3D. ;)

    Of course!

I'm not quite sure what you're referring to?

I should have been clearer. On a sketch I shared privately with Donny (not sure if it can be shared publicly yet), Andy indicates there's a "pocket door" that matches the wall which can slide shut to isolate the cargo bay from the ramp leading to the airlock door proper and an off-screen door leading to a spacesuit locker aft.

Other than what we discussed privately over the last hour, I'm also wondering where this "off-screen" door is leading to a space-suit locker, since we see both walls of the docking port alcove and those diagonal insets aren't very door friendly.

Not that I want to diverge from Probert's notes, but I'm leaning towards having a small airlock beyond these circular doors (complete with airlock controls), which would then have pressure doors leading to a spacesuit locker to the aft side and doors leading to a lounge on the forward side, with the exterior port doors obviously directly across.

Yeah, it might be best if said suit-locker was accessed in between two airlock door ring, but it never made sense to to have the ring—which is designed for a docking collar—as the inside of two hatches.

I think the entry Andy suggested was maybe him not remembering the airlock hatch as shown in this shot and that you could see the wall there. I guess you could have that room (if you want it) accessible via a hatch on the cargo bay in the wall somewhere forward of the airlock ramp.

I agree, but we're kind of stuck with it thanks to TWOK.

Unless it was a change made for the training ship, like using a Klingon bridge for a torpedo deck. ;)
