But that is not what's happening according to what is said in the show? Spock proposes that all Starfleet officers who remain who know about Discovery's spore drive, the time suit, and the ships alleged fate are prohibited from mentioning it. That's a small group of people, who in their capacity as members of Starfleet can be ordered to keep highly classified information to themselves.

Spock is not proposing to erase every trace of the Discovery from history, which is good because that would be silly, he is trying to prevent several key bits of information to get into the wrong hands, be it control or S31:

    A) the Discovery wasn't destroyed and her crew not killed, they opened a wormhole and went into the future
    B) there's such a thing as a time suit and people with the right schematics can build one

That's it. That's what needs to be hidden. Those who know about it aren't allowed to talk about it, those who don't know about it will be fed an official version that goes something like this: the research vessel Discovery has suffered a fatal engine failure and was lost with all hands, just like its sister ship the Glenn beforehand.

And guess what? There is your erasing from history. Discovery will become a footnote as a failed scientific venture, which is why no one a hundred years later will go out of their way to mention it, since everything extraordinary about it was classified.

However, the heroes did write farewell letters to their loved ones before disappearing. Letters saying things like "There is a battle coming, Siranna"...

The simplest way to deal with those would probably be to mail them, accompanied with a more official letter stating that the battle anticipated in that other letter went badly and the daughter/son/spouse/colleague is dead now. Only minimal censorship would be needed, then, to ensure that the nature of the opponent in that battle remained sufficiently obscure. (Pike no doubt made it clear to the heroes that they should be writing carefully anyway).

The alternative would be to intercept those letters, delete them, and say that the calamity which was Not A Battle At All and definitely didn't involve any evil AIs took the crew by surprise. But that would be the greater lie, and perhaps the path of the greater effort, if it turned out communications were expected from some of the writers and mysteriously failed to materialize, at a suspicious moment.

Better perhaps not to draw attention to the scientific experiments carried out aboard the ship at all; the loss of the Glenn was no doubt the doing of the Klingons, and the rumors about experiments were all false.

    Oh, and...

I thought this couldn't be clearer? Anybody can attack Earth. But nobody, including the Klingons, ever had the guts to do that. Which is what DSC so nicely shows: Klingons get cold feet at the very doorstep of Earth, fearing that the attack would cost them too much.

This perfectly meets the requirements of Martok's line, which states "even my people never attempted that". They didn't attempt and fail. They got afraid and turned away before attempting. Which makes the Breen the superior race of warriors; that the Breen actually failed is inconsequential there, as it was all about having the guts to proceed.

Tell me more of this re the Breen
Are you saying that the Breen actually sent a task force to attack Earth ?
I assume this was during TNG, as I wasn't obsessive about that show and obviously missed that episode.

It does seem that yet again it's another litmus test of how you felt about the show coming in, and not grounds for how you might feel about the show. One person's lazy writing is another's 'what's the issue here?'

Hey, there's more than enough actual stuff to criticize with Discovery's writing. In the last episode alone:

The way Cornwell's sacrifice is set up and executed on the show? Yikes. Sarek and Amanda popping in and out of Discovery for a tearful goodbye that would have made more sense with holograms? Whyyyy? "Yum yum"? While not as much of an issue for me as for some, certainly not the most inspired thing one can come up with.

But I do get a stick in my craw if people build a strawman to criticize the show for something that isn't actually there. At no point on the show does anyone say that every single person, including family members, has to pretend the Discovery and her crew never existed. Which again, would be silly and probably result in the worst case of the Streisand effect ever.

It seems that Spock is arguing to make time travel illegal.

Only to go gallivanting around making sure Edith Keeler dies and getting whales and stuff from the past. No shame the man.

The Breen are barely mentioned on TNG. It's a DS9 species.

...Finally getting a bit of action in S7, yes. Not all that much, though. There's also a single VOY appearance, but the "story of the Breen" remains to be told. Might as well be DSC that tells it, if it comes to that.

What's amusing is that Picard in TNG "Hero Worship" dismisses the Breen as potential suspects because the eyewitness says the assailants wore helmets... Talk about ignored intent.

To be fair on Voyager, it was a Breen hologram, we also see a Jem hologram. I bet that one didn't need any white.

Considering how long it currently takes to declassify things now I think we can assume that some things can be locked away no problem :)

Sybok would have loved a ship flying on shrooms!! Plus he could be the ship's anesthetist: "Let me take away your pain!".

Not only that but he would have made them useful members of the crew. He had a knack for integrating misfits.
