Spoilers Batwoman - Season 1

If all things were equal, sure. But, that's not the world. Ours or theirs.
But, why also remove a part of a person's identity?
Why can't the show be about a woman? Why does it have to be a genderless character?
They can make whatever they want, and we can like whatever we want. While we're at it we can also discuss whether we like something for whatever reason. Enough censorship on here!!!!

She can but it just feels like from the trailer that they're going to emphasizing it a lot. I just don't want it to fall into the same traps Supergirl did.
I also wonder how they are going to deal with her origin story since "don't ask don't tell" is long gone. They're not going to care about that now.

Supergirl didn't fall into any traps. It's the exact show the creators meant for it to be.

All these attempts to re-frame appeals to basic human decency as "censorship" bring to mind what Neil Gaiman once said about political correctness:

I was reading a book (about interjections, oddly enough) yesterday which included the phrase “In these days of political correctness…” talking about no longer making jokes that denigrated people for their culture or for the colour of their skin. And I thought, “That’s not actually anything to do with ‘political correctness’. That’s just treating other people with respect.”

Which made me oddly happy. I started imagining a world in which we replaced the phrase “politically correct” wherever we could with “treating other people with respect”, and it made me smile.

You should try it. It’s peculiarly enlightening.

I know what you’re thinking now. You’re thinking “Oh my god, that’s treating other people with respect gone mad!”

Another jackass trying to indoctrinate people into their way of thinking. Please stop. I have had enough mob censorship on here. The echo chamber dies NOW.

All these people complaining of censorship are really just upset that they aren't able to openly attack certain groups without being called out on it. They used to be able to get away with it because people stayed silent, now they're rightfully called an asshole for it and they aren't happy. Too bad, we aren't going back. And they aren't even being censored for it, they just don't get to pretend they're a good person anymore despite what they say.

It's also very telling that it's mostly calling people slurs. Poor oppressed babies, you can't freely attack people anymore.

I don't know anything about Batwoman in the comics. I did watch a cartoon movie where she was the star awhile back and I liked it. My question though is. Why does she if she want to stand on her own, wear something even similar to Batman's outfit? Even with the alteration it still looks like the Batman suit with a red wig and a dash of red added. Wouldn't it make sense to at least dump the cowl ears and maybe something that is a different color than black? Or even not go by the name Batwoman and come up with something that doesn't scream "I know Batman, or I work for Batman, or I am inspired by Batman."

Also what is the chances we will see Gordon or Robin or any of the other Batman secondary characters on the show?

Since Batman's been gone three years, why shouldn't she? She wouldn't be seen as his sidekick or assistant, but his replacement. She's not subordinating herself to his iconography, she's claiming it for herself since he isn't using it anymore.

I suppose that makes sense but I wonder what the average citizen thinks. They must be wondering where Barman went and then all off sudden after 3 years your get someone who is kind of doing the Batman thing. They must be wondering if their is some connection or if she is just a random vigilante that is trying to copy his style. The internet chat in Gotham must be all crazy with all sorts of Batman and Batwoman theories trying to figure what exactly is up. I can only wonder what the Arrowverse Trekbbs is like when this issue comes up.:)

Is this a joke?

Nope. Asking someone to consider the history and context of a word that is being co-opting by a group in order to lessen it's meaning is not a free speech issue. It's a Hey Have You Considered What You Are Saying/Doing issue. Or it's a Hey, Don't Be An Ass issue.

There was no threat to "Freedom of Speech" as it was asking for consideration and providing information and then letting the speaker make up their own mind.

And, in fact, you don't have a right to "Free Speech" on this board. If the owners of this board decided to ban any mention of Star Wars, they would be in their right to do so and it wouldn't impact your "Free Speech" in any way.

Freedom of Speech means the government can't lock you up for saying shit. Freedom of Speech isn't a blanket to protect you from criticism OF that speech.

They can make whatever they want, and we can like whatever we want. While we're at it we can also discuss whether we like something for whatever reason. Enough censorship on here!!!!

1. Who is censoring anyone?
2. Really, WHO is censoring anyone?
3. I'm discussing. Are you saying I can't say what I think?
4. How do you feel about hypocrisy?

As others have said, I don't think Supergirl fell into any traps. And also, makes sense they are emphasizing it... It's not Batman. It's Batwoman. An audience might be interested.

I also wonder how they are going to deal with her origin story since "don't ask don't tell" is long gone. They're not going to care about that now.

Well, they can tinker with the origin, there could be other reasons why she left the military. It's not like the character won't be a lesbian in this version.

Your understanding of the meaning of censorship is...flawed. At no point have your rights to freedom of speech been infringed here (primarily because no one here has such rights—we have the privilege of expressing ourselves at the leisure of the private owners of this website).

It's really not about freedom of speech, it's freedom from speech. You used to be able to openly say the n-word or any other slur. Just say whatever bigoted thought popped into your head, no one responded or said anything because it was socially acceptable. It isn't anymore and we're better off for it. Now you're still free to say awful shit, but there are consequences. And for someone who hasn't been able to say every single awful thing they wanted consequences are censorship. They have to keep those awful thoughts to themselves and as someone who was the target of some of those things, I couldn't be happier. I hope they're utterly miserable. It was always wrong to say those things, but now the majority of society knows it. They're just mad that they're being treated like those they wanted to hurt.

If they want to pretend that isn't the truth, then what speech is being censored in their views?

There is no positive benefit to forcing people to keep what they want to say to themselves. It adds to that person's shadow, and eventually the shadow becomes a heavy burden and the person snaps. All because some people can't deal with a few words.

And who is talking about freedom of speech? Not relevant to this discussion.

There is when those people are trying to force others into the shadows and exclude them from society, like they did before.

Maybe they should learn that such people is no longer acceptable as are the thoughts that spawn them. We've moved on as a society and such views are no longer welcome. They've had their say and it's been rejected.

Tell me what makes such speech valuable or worthy of tolerating other than it exists and isn't illegal to say?

People need to be free to say whatever the fuck they want, or bad things happen. I explained that very clearly.

You are free to say it, it's just no longer going to be respected. It's going to be shunned as it should be.

The fact that you have to imply a threat speaks volumes. "Let us say or that speech will turn to violence." You're really bringing good into the world.
