Spoilers Season 8 Episode 1 (Spoilers ... duh!)

I hated Sisko leaving his family at the end of S7. I thought it flew in the face of one of their proudest plot lines, of showing a present, loving, brown father (as Brooks might put it). Sisko had a baby on the way and he left his family behind. Just pissed me off.

And Jake was probably 19. That's pretty young to lose his dad, especially when he's the only remaining parent.

How do you know he didn't come back the next day? ...or yesterday? ;)

Well, we don't, but they didn't show anything to make us think he came back soon or often either.

Well, my point being that the writers didn't expect him to come back soon. S8E1 has his baby a grown man who never knew his dad.
Was Sisko's ending in the final episode a possible allegory in reflecting absent fathers in the home in the United States? If so, I can definitely feel your disappointment, Sisko never felt like a man who would leave his responsibilities. Michael Piller was still around I'm wondering if Sisko's death was his plan all along and Ira honored it with the finale?

Nope.

Was Julian the ship's surgeon on Ezri's ship similar to the relationship Captain Robert April had with his wife on the Enterprise?

As originally written, Sisko said nothing about returning. Avery Brooks pointed out to the writers how they were showing a black man abandoning his family and being a deadbeat dad, so they added the line to emphasize that he would be coming back.

I would picture his return being more like how Wesley randomly popped up at Riker & Troi's wedding in NEM, after all the big talk of exploring other planes of existence with the Traveler.

Wasn't a fan. Prefer the novel version.
There were similar decisions, but that doesn't mean the story was drawn from the novels. The generic destinies for most Trek characters are more or less set: Captain, Ambassador, Professor at Academy.

No, he and Ezri aren't together in the books.
Good call on the novelist's part, I thought their kindle was forced and I felt Ezri was part of some rebound by Bashir. Romance was the thing on DS9 War years.

For Avery Brooks, as least, understood the allegory the writers unintentionally stamped on the character of Sisko. That title "What You Leave Behind" was an appropriate title for everything that's left unfinished because of that tired war. Benjamin Sisko deserved a better ending than what he received; the pilot addressed linear and non-linear states, it would've been nice to see those elements return to test and complete Sisko's journey. There's no need to have Kassidy pregnant at that stage of the plot, unless having Sisko abandoning them was part of the plan.
