I like the new uniforms. They're definitely evocative of the TNG/DS9/VOY era, but they seem to be a tad more comfortable and they do seem like they're two-piece outfits from that last spy pic.
The main hero costumes were done as two pieces I think, and it was the background characters in the boilersuit style uniforms. I wonder if they will film around the Tillman Water Reclamation Plant, or would the Acadamy have changed to a more modern building?
Discovery replaces TOS in look and style, so no. I'm curious if they depict the classic-era Enterprise in Picard, whether it'll have Discoverse aesthetics. That and of course, how Klingons and Worf will look.
Goddamn. I promised myself to keep expectations low! This are the same producers that are still right in the middle of figuring out what they want their other Trek show (DIS) to actually be... And yet... Just this picture - Stewart, the TNG era uniforms, the non-dark-n-gritty lightning... Holy shit, sorry I just got emotional! More than I ever did for anything DIS to be honest - the first comic con trailer, the actual trailers... they were interesting. But none of them gut-punched me like this simple image. And I'm a TOS guy through and through, goddammit!
Exactly what I was thinking. Will Worf and the other Klingons retain their look from TNG era Trek or will they now look like Disco Klingons?
This reminds me of that meme with the drawing that can be two dancers or a set of bewbs depending on how your eyes focus that says, "If you think you're a straight guy but see two dancers, I have news for you..." Your through and through might be threw and threw - as in, done and done.
Unless TOS episodes are reshot in Discovery style and actually replace those episodes, this is objectively nothing more than a (very popular) fan theory. No offense intended, but I go exactly by what's onscreen. Even if the writers say stuff in interviews, it isn't canon until it's onscreen--there's a reason Hoshi dying on Tarsus IV isn't canon. Take the dispute over Dumbledore's dating preferences for example. I feel it's not enough for Rowling to say something in some obscure interviews, we need to see it on screen like Stamets and Culber. Or in Dumbledore's case in a canon Harry Potter book if not one of the canon prequel films.
Errr, actually no. It's just that no other series thus far has captured the spirit of what I liked about TOS - DIS feels IMO much more like an approximation of the TNG era films - still a noticeable "back to the roots"-vibe, but also very, very distinct in it's late VOY/NEM-style. JJs Kelvin movies on the other hand are most comparable to ENT actually, rather than TOS. The better part of ENT (especially season 4), but still much closer to TOS. What I liked so much about TOS was a lot of the adventure vibe, whereas all later productions that wanted to duplicate that instead got deeper into action. But TOS was extrem reliant on high-concept SF, more than any other Trek series ever since then - from civilisations run by computers, to alien monsters that aren't what they seem to be - no other Trek series has captured that wild imagination (whereas many captured good parts of TOS - some got the character interactions right, some the action, but no one yet the whole plate). For me it will always be TOS > TNG. But only barely. And they are both widely different. I sure do hope this series does capture the TNG vibe a little. Not in the 80s-era-tv-show obviously. But in a more thoughtfull, deliberate, slower approach to everything.
It looks like this show will be lighter than we've gotten in Star Trek lately. I like that. Also, the uniform updates are pretty cool.
I'm pretty sure the Klingons in Picard will look more like TNG Klingons. More like but not exactly like. DSC S2 was already backtracking on the S1 look. They can only do so much on Disco because it's the same series. Since Picard is a different series altogether and seems to want to evoke the '90s as much as it can... I feel like we won't see much of DSC in PIC at all. And I say this as someone who's a big Discovery fan and as someone who'll probably like it more than Picard.
I like the uniforms! Look like the DS9/VOY-ones, but with a collar. Though they are a bit broader/more stiff on the shoulders (like the DIS uniforms that also put extra detail on the shoulders). WOnder if these are just the Academy uniforms or (as I hope) the "real", current Starfleet uniforms. I did like the grey movie uniforms as well. But colors is IMO better. Like the idea of the grey uniforms being the "military" uniforms. Also - funny head-canon - if Starfleet cycles through uniforms, maybe the turtlenecks-without-turtleneck unifroms (the TWOK ones) that Picard wore in all his flashbacks on the Stargazer - could similar be throw-back uniforms to the TOS movie era, and inbetween that - during Treks "Lost era" (between the TOS movies and TNG) - they also had the one or other uniform type in between (one that would look better on a HD-screen, should they ever film something in that era) Very well put. It also does the important stuff of "putting character first". Still struggling with this show being on an entirely different streaming service though... that's a shame.
What a nonsensical thing to say, since DSC is set 8-10 years before TOS and has no direct overlap with it. It's utterly bizarre to me how people who are fine accepting TMP's look as just a refit/costume update from TOS are unwilling to apply the same explanation to DSC vis-a-vis TOS/TAS even though the time gap between them is more than twice as great. What in the world is wrong with that? He's grown and changed -- that's what makes it worthwhile to tell new stories about him.
That dude in black leather actually looks interesting. That's a much more intricate costume than all the other uniforms. And doesn't look like a Vulcan. I guess this is a Romulan, probably an important player in the episode/arc. IMO not a bad design - not the TNG disco-shoulder-pads, more like a cross between the designs from "Nemesis" and Neros crew from ST09.
Why is he wearing the weird timecop badge when the photos show the Starfleet badge is similar to the "All Good Things..." version?
