Eight of the fifteen season two episodes were quite enjoyable- a significant improvement over season one.

Discovery still suffers from the behind-the-scenes turmoil which has rendered it unfocused, unsure of its own direction, and riddled with plot holes. My hope is that Michelle Paradise will make it more than a handful of episodes as showrunner and, in essence, do for Discovery what Michael Pillar did for TNG.

    The cast is quite good.

Yeah, the cast is quite good. I can't stand the Saru character most of the time, however.

Yeah, apart from the three legs that he doesn't seem to have is he supposed to be like Mr.Arex from TAS?
I find that most things I watch today meld together as a mess like a blancmange! I can never remember anything from what I've seen by the next episode where as old television shows like TOS and many others still resonate in my large bonce! :techman: Not sure if that's just me and my age or the fact that programmes made today lack the quality of the old?

More the latter in the case of the shows we're discussing, I suspect, JB!

I do prefer the single episode format like TOS and shows of that era like Land of The Giants, Space 1999 to the serial formula used by most series today! I mean Discovery was one long storyline spread across fifteen episodes really instead of the many different adventures they could have had! DS9 was the first Trek to have the story arc system wasn't it? But at least with that show you could understand why, not that I've seen the later shows! I'm still working my way through the first season at the moment!

Visually, the show is a joy to look at.
The stories could benefit from another pass or three through the writers' room.

Agree. Visually the show added in so much to the TOS era that I would be quite happy just to have that.

The stories require work but the characters are interesting enough to keep me going.

I tend to agree, though the season seemed to fall off a cliff with "The Red Angel".

Yes, it did. I enjoyed eight of the first nine episodes quite a bit. The cracks started showing after "A Sound of Thunder," but I was still with it up through "Project Daedelus." Everything after that was just a mess.

Sorry, the original transmission was infected with a virus that we haven't been able to fix.

... but Star Trek is an adventure. Or at least TOS was. I sometimes wonder if I would be a Trekkie today if TNG, and not TOS, was the first one I grew up with.

This book Moby-Dick sucks! Two chapters in, and still no whale!

This is a good motto for staying sane.

Yeah, but then we'd be stuck with shows, books and movies about the adventures of Captain Reginald Baggybottom, or Ian James Knickerworthy, or Pennington Fitz-Lloyd Smith or some such.

I find STDisco to be more like Zack Snyder's DC movies than the Marvel stuff.

Yes, although I've seen the first season before, I've not seen them since the nineties to be honest! A few episodes of season two and Trials and Tribblations and that's all I've seen of DS9! I've still yet to see the final two seasons of TNG as well me old Phaser! :techman:

As primarily a TOS fan, I liked Discovery overall. Magnitudes better than Enterprise. After the season 2 finale though I found it ended in such a way that I do not hunger for more. It did make me want to see more Pike, Spock and Number One though. Definitely not the reaction the producers want of course, however, they only have themselves to blame. I really think they should quite while they've broken even. Right now it has the feel of a good mini-series. It told it's story and now it's time to move on(I know they are going to force a season 3 and that's too bad as it will likely tarnish rather than enhance the series' legacy).

The reason for this, for me anyway, lay in the weird pacing and general unevenous of the second season. Backstage turmoil is never a good thing and, for some reason, American TV/Film executives can rarely hold the course when it comes to the "vision" of a story or a series.

It's a crappy alt-universe that has no connection to TOS, so I ignore it.

I saw Anson Mount at a convention on the weekend.
Quite a few Discovery fans had questions for him. I personally have not yet seen the Pike episodes but seeing him in person and hearing him speak I could not imagine better casting. He has the look and "gravitas" of Pike of the original series.
The actor took the role very seriously and wanted to be true to the original series. He also said the producers wanted to be respectful to the original series with the Enterprise ship design - updating it enough to appeal to modern audiences but keeping it respectful to the original design. He also claims TPTB take into account audience feedback through twitter and other social media.

I enjoy Discovery more than any of the other variations of Trek since TOS and I did enjoy season 2 a lot more than 1, but I've never been a Klingon fan.
TNG was the Trek I grew up with and let me tell you, I was NOT a fan and TNG was why. I didn't become a Trekkie until a friend talked me into seeing ST 2009, the hot actors helped a great deal admittedly. :rommie: I then went back and watched TOS and loved it. I enjoy all Trek except TNG. Can't watch it. I tried to go back and watch it once I became a fan and I still can't make it all the way through. I've given up.

I'm pretty sure I read a Kurtzman interview somewhere where he said he visits Trek forums and such and reads people's opinions so I wouldn't be surprised if that is indeed accurate.
