YOu know I have been waiting for years to see these scenes. I hoped they would have been on the dvd's but they never were.

Good point, and 'kind of' is an apt description. But does the average person know Quark? I would say no to that, as for basically all the DS9 characters, and the same goes for Enterprise and Discovery for that matter. I'm not sure about Seven of Nine or Janeway on Voyager. I know Janeway was on a TV Guide cover, but so was Sisko, as were the other captains. And I'm assuming that Seven of Nine had to have been on a cover at some point. I could see Seven of Nine being a little better known than even Janeway (while Voyager was airing primarily), but not by much. I read that there was discussion about getting Seven into Star Trek Nemesis, but they went with Janeway instead. But with Nemesis being the lowest grossing TNG film and the death knell of that movie series, I don't think many non-Trekkies/Trekkers saw that movie anyway to see the cameo.

I don't think many people even know that movie even exists. Frankly I think that is also the case with "Enterprise" as a show as well. I think the Picard show will maybe change people's knowledge about "Nemesis" though. I think "Enterprises" one big lasting impact was they showed you could bring back some of the older "TOS" aliens if you wanted like the Andorians or Orions etc and it wouldn't feel silly or to 60's.

The most basic version of it is that Terry wanted to do fewer episodes in the the final season, the execs said that was not acceptable and that they wanted her to be present for all of them.

I wonder how many fewer episodes she wanted to do. Without the complications of introducing Ezri I can imagine there being some room to maneuver, but not a lot.

I noticed something about Dax in season 4. Except for "REJOINED" and her shared scenes with Bashir in "STARSHIP DOWN" and "THE QUICKENING", she didn't gave the spotlight on her at all. But she was sort of the bouncer for the other characters, like Riker on TNG. What I mean by bouncer is the other characters get great moments partly due to the bouncer helping play off them. Riker was really good at this, particularly with Data.

Dax sort of kept that going in season 5, so honestly, I can see them needing her for more episodes simply because of scenes.

One could argue that task can be done by anyone, but some are better bouncers than others.

Fairly central in Sword of Kahless, too.

She wanted to do only half the season.

Ohhh. Well, I can't see that being viable.

True about "THE SWORD OF KAHLESS". Still a fairly low amount of spotlight.

There are no episodes that are solely Dax-centered between Rejoined to Afterimage. During that period there are no episodes that break new ground on Trill biology or society

I think one issue of less Dax is they were going to be doing that big final arc and they weren't sure as to how they were going to wrap up the show. When your doing a big massive arc on the fly you never know how it's going to play out and when you will need a character and not having that character available can screw up your arc.

And in the end, Terry (by her own words) gave them an ultimatum and they made their choice.

Exactly. Quark was the funniest DS9 character and the most recognizable mascot for DS9. He was featured in a lot promotional materials.

DS9 pulled in nielson ratings of 19 for The Emissary. That's higher than any TNG episode! Season 1 was a pretty steep drop from 14 million viewers to 9 million, which was bottom end of TNG ratings. It's clear that many viewers watched the first season and then abandoned the show.

My understanding is a lot of TNG viewers hated that they made the decision to have Sisko irrationally blame Picard for his wife's death.

All of the Berman era Treks had big steady drops post premiere.

TNG can be considered Berman-era and it didn't.

I guess she really wanted to be in Becker. I caught a few of those episodes. Yes, she had more exposure as an actress on that show than on DS9, but her character was limited to delivering one-liners. I can't imagine that was very satisfying for an actor.

Terry didn't actually test for Becker until she was already wrapped on DS9.

That Sisko was being irrational due to not having moved on from his wife's death is one of the whole points of that scene. Oy gevalt.

I guess even in the first episode DS9 was muddying the protagonists and setting us up to not always root for them.
