What We Left Behind - Documentary Update Confirms *Some* HD Remastering

I found the discussion on gathering the HD footage interesting, but it wasn't anything I didn't already know, given how closely I followed the TNG remastering process. I thought it was still worth sitting through though.

Quite a few people left the theater where I saw it during this part. It definitely felt like a bluray extra, and it was good that it came after because it was clearly for just the superfans. Personally, I was fascinated.

Well, I am extraordinarily mad at myself.

Ugh, I'm so sorry. We've all done this kind of thing, and worse. You can make it up when the doc is released to video/streaming and just throw a huge party instead.

 

[Bad Thoughts]

I didn't learn that much more than I did from the DS9 chapter of the Fifty-Year Mission, but it was entertaining, with more than a few laughs.

I think I hoped for something that divulged more details, but in the end, I glad it was a different movie. Two hours of Ira fighting Rick and Kerry would have not appealed to many people.

I'm in a Facebook group of Dukat/Alaimo fans and some of them were NOT happy about what Nana said about Marc.

I don’t blame her with the way he talking about suiting his own personal desires in the guise of his character.

Summary: Enjoyed the big screen. The theatre where I saw it in Seattle was pretty big, maybe 900 seats, and about 1/3 full. Glad to be seeing it with the audience.

I appreciated the upscale most for the inside scenes and seeing the characters more clearly. The space battle seemed to have oversaturated color, a sort of cartoony look, like all the ships were fresh from painting and detailing, not working ships in a war. If they ever do a blu-ray or 4k upscale of the entire series I hope they don't use this look for all the space exterior shots. But I do still hope the do the whole series!

It didn't seem like there was any big reveal for why Terry Farrell left. The gist of what she said has been out on fan sites, including here, for years. We didn't get the producers' side of it before and we aren't now, and I figure we probably won't.

Poor Nog. Like losing his leg wasn't enough.

Man, it must have killed Max Grodénchik inside to have to sing "The Lady Is a Tramp" as if he couldn't sing in the episode. He has a great voice.

I thought Kerry McCluggage addressed it (although not in a satisfying way).

I agree that the upgrade looked best on the close ups and the scenes on the Promenade. The space battles looked OK but I wasn't very impressed with the HD shots inside the Defiant bridge. I never thought the FC uniforms were a good match for the lighting on the Defiant bridge anyway. Not enough contrasts. The farewell between Sisko and Cassidy looked great and one could see the details on those uniforms. The farewell between Odo and Kira on the changling planet looked the worst. That might have been SD if there was any.

Terry Farrell: Michael Dorn said it best: only the players involved know what happened. All we hear is public spin.

I found that totally creepy, but I've never met him or really seen any interviews with him, so I didn't know if perhaps the whole thing was a joke?

Alaimo didn’t have any indication of an “I’m just kidding” demeanor in his interview, especially how his attitude about how he felt the producers didn’t praise him enough for his work. They tried to play it off as a joke with Visitor correcting herself and leaving it in the final cut. Doesn’t seem like a smart thing to do in a #MeToo world we live in today.

I'm sure there was a lot disappointment and criticism that still rattles Ira Behr but he should consider that in its time DS9 was as popular as Voyager if I remember correctly. Both series got 7 years. Enterprise got 4. Even the TNG movies got less and less popular.
So in hindsight DS9 was more or less just as popular as every series that followed TNG.

I've seen the documentary and I enjoyed it. Somethings I wanted to see explored more, but still, it was really nice revisiting the show and the cast and crew and getting a glimpse of what a Season 8 could be.

Even though Deep Space Nine became my favorite show by the end of its run, I don't think it was as popular as Voyager. Voyager had network backing and seemed to get more promotion than DS9. Even in the promotion for Enterprise, in the list of captains, Sisko wasn't mentioned, which was like Paramount already forgetting DS9 existed like a year or two after it was off the air.

As far as I can tell, there were no breakout characters from DS9 to the mainstream pop culture like arguably Picard and Data (for a time at least) or perhaps Worf did. It sucks because DS9 had the best written/developed characters of any of the series and I could see Garak, Odo, and Quark, among others, being pop culture favorites, but it has yet to happen.

Deep Space Nine had higher ratings than Voyager almost the entire time it was on. The only exception was right at the start of Voyager's first season.

I flew a terrible length to watch this in theaters and it did not disappoint. It actually hit me emotionally way harder than I thought. My absolute favorite show of all time, a huge part of my formative years and something still very dear to my heart. What a wonderful love letter to the fans, cast, and crew.

Yeah. Keep in mind though that DS9 was syndicated, while VOY and ENT were on UPN, which was not available in every single media market in the country. Hence the argument could be made that VOY would have been roughly similar in ratings if it had as much nationwide exposure as DS9.
