He states in at least one episode that he can eat if he wants but doesn't need to.
In his quest to be human, one might expect for him to eat just like all humans have to do.
But wouldn't that just be an illogical waste of time? Waste of resources?
He can't really taste, there would be no reason for it.
Not to contribute to more off topic banter lol but there's ultimately no reason for him to have hair either, except for him to better participate in the human experience, which was his maker's intent. That's why Data isn't just a robot. He's an android, a machine AI, meant to exist AS human. Eating, sleeping, dreaming, fornicating, socializing, etc... There's but one reason he does any of it, so to be human

I think he states in the episode with the traumatized little boy that he does "have" to ingest something that helps to lubricate his "bio functions." "Is it good?" the boy asks back, "It's best to say it is "good for me'" Data responds.
Anyway, interesting to see a thread on this episode popping up as the other day I was spontaneously motivated to watch this episode through a series of brain farts leading to me think about a certain scene in it that compelled me to watch the episode.
