The Down Under Lounge

I won't be voting for either of the major parties. Obviously we can't go on with the current mob, but the notion that everything will magically be better with a Labor government is too laughable for words. They're as bad as each other and too many of their policies (especially immigration, asylum seekers, privacy) are essentially identical. A genuine third alternative would be nice but as there isn't one I'll just have to pick someone on the day and hope for the best.

Such a classy campaign, though. Candidates being disendorsed for all manner of repellent things, the Palmer creature apparently gaining traction, Frydenberg posters defaced with Nazi symbols (particularly foul considering his background)... It's not exactly inspiring stuff. Surely we can do better than this.

Labor have so far moved so far from the grassroots origins that it is appalling. I live in a currently safe Labor seat so I don’t think it will make much difference and Julie Collins our member is OK in my opinion. I do wish however that I lived one electorate over and could vote for the Independent Andrew Wilkie.

Shitty people realise it's their time to be corrup-- errrr, I mean, shine.

Yeah and I can blame only one person for the rise of shitty people, and the USA elected him. It was as if a giant "go to" signal appeared around the world and shitty people came out the woodwork, and into politics voicing their inner self.

Let me see if I can clear it up with a couple of images and a thought, that in elections, a party doesn't win, the other party loses.

And keep in mind, Howard had the bulk of the resources boom taxation to call on... and we were still worse off under them.

So keep in mind the biggest lie of the election: the LNP are the better money managers. Utter bullshit. Time and again, they have proven they aren't.

ETA: And don't believe the mainstream media, aka the Murdochcracy. Read the Saturday Paper for a view from the other side. yes, very left biased, but it at least backs up what it says with hard facts.

SBS Viceland is showing The Fifth Element repeatedly from midday today to 1:45 am tomorrow morning. Including ads, that's six times in a row.

I'm kinder sick of politics. I'm in a safe Labor seat in western Melbourne. I'm yet to decide if I'll watch any of the coverage.

I'm sick of the Palmer ads and his constant negativity and bullshit. There's no way in hell we will ever have nuclear power in this country with the current or future political climate unless someone really wants radical change but he goes on about that. It won't happen you silly man.

I don't even know why he's bothering to run in this election.

You yourself said we had to get rid of the current mob, and the only way to make sure is to make sure the other mob gets in. Who else? Greens? Too random. UAP? Too greedy. One Neuron? Too mad. As I said, it's not one party wins, but the other party loses, and after the shitshow of the last six years I want them gone. No time for neutrality on this.

EDIT: you may be objecting to the text on the graphics about "Does this break it down for you?" Not my work, the graphics are as they was passed to me.

At the end, it makes the point, there's shi*fuc*ery on both sides, and whichever Govt is next, it'll need to be held to account.

Well it would help all the people that can't read or write. How do they manage to vote?

I was making fun of Australis's mansplaining politics to Orac Zen via pretty pictures:

Let me see if I can clear it up with a couple of images

Labor vs Liberal has never been a Good vs Evil deal* and default backing one party with the idea that the other party is always bad was an old school standard exploited by both parties. I believe people are both more nuanced and more fed up these days to swallow that anymore.

*except Latham. Can you believe labor wanted that douchebag lunatic as PM?! Hopefully we never see him back in either main party running for anything.

Sorry, @teacake in this case, I have to disagree; at this time, I believe the difference is as stark as Trump and Dems. Really. And a hung Parliament, with too many crossbenchers brings, more often than not, stalemate and less-than-helpful compromise. You can't look at the LNP and think, "yeah, I want three more years of that."

The ALP is not perfect, of course not. It is, at this time, though, the less-bad option, which is what I said up-page: one party doesn't win, the other one loses, and the LNP, and their fellow travellers (PHON, UAP, Aust Conservatives, et al) deserve to lose. Think of Nauru. Climate change, The Murray-Darling. That's only three of so very many.

My goal, if Labor gets in, is to held them accountable, any way that I can. There are a bunch of people who think the same. The time for politicians to slide by saying, "oh we can't afford to do that because budget black hole," has passed. The time for letting corporations slide by untaxed has passed.

Kids are just striking for a day off school, they're worried. We should be too. I strongly feel there's a better chance with this with Labor than with a party in the pocket of Big Coal.

And if you think Latham is evil, then you haven't looked too hard at the LNP. At best incompetent, at worst beyond corrupt. I'm assuming you know Latham got into the NSW Govt in our last election, this year, on the PHON ticket.

I think the libs have two major problems.

a) the domination of the hard right of the party
b) there's been little renewal in the party. Normally after a loss like 2007 you'd a gradual exdodus of longer serving members - especially former ministers. This time they've stuck around and only now are see some new blood coming in but sadly it's more of the hard right type.

It's a worrying sign that despite being a utter policy vacuum, the lnp is so close in the polls.

morrison is an utter douche and his ministers are pretty much in hiding yet you've got the murdoch press, 2gb, skynews etc anointing them as the second coming.

Would be nice if the senate winds up being more pliable so a labor government could do something about the abomination that is news corpse and tell murdoch and murdoch jr to fuck off. If they don't want to Australian citizens then they can stay the fuck out of Australian politics.

Oh lordy is this an actual ballot paper? Purportedly from the seat of Fisher.

Get a load of the last party.... Wow all the xenophobes in one list.
