Anyone get the impression I don't like that movie? Okay, I don't. It was completely unmemorable
I wouldn't say it was completely unmemorable. As a tourism ad the first half would have totally made me want to visit Pandora for a holiday.

I must be one of the few people who loved avatar. I just don't get the hate for it.
It’s not the hate. It just didn’t age well. Cameron also really screwed up waiting 10+ years to make sequels. No one really wants Avatar any more and now four more movies are coming which many don’t want or care about. And also Avatar has had its day as top dog. It’s time to to stand aside.

I just pulled up the top all time domestic grosses adjusted for inflation on Box Office Mojo.
  1. Gone With the Wind - $1,822,598, 200
  2. Star Wars - $1,604,857,600
  3. The Sound of Music - $1,283,791,300
  4. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial - $1,278,107,600
  5. Titanic - $1,221,303,800
  6. The Ten Commandants - $1,180,310,000
  7. Jaws - $1,153,990,200
  8. Doctor Zhivago - $118,460,500
  9. The Exorcist - $996,498,500
  10. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves - $982,090,000
  11. Star Wars: The Force Awakens - $974,117,00
Endgame is at #129 with $393,446,989,
I honestly had no idea ET, Jaws, or The Exorcist were that popular.

"The Exorcist" was considered one of the scariest horror films made to it 's day (in 1973). When my parents went to see it, they had to lie about my age (I was 10; but most theaters where NOT allowing anyone under 12 - even with parents' consent.) And no, my parents weren't derelict. Even at that age I knew the difference/could separate between a fantasy situation on film and real life; and nothing on the screen of a film bothered me because I knew it wasn't real - my sister (who was 17 at the time) was another story. After the film I used to get a kick by moving her bed when she was asleep as she'd wake up a scream. She was actually very unnerved by that film after she saw it. Me, even at 10, I was more interested and was reading up on how they managed some of the practical effects like the projectile pea soup as vomit. ;)

"Jaws" was the film that showed studios the drawing power of a "Summer Blockbuster". And it was yet another film (even though it was just rated PG) that the theaters showing it were not allowing kids under 12 in (again even with parents); but I was legitimately 12 when that film was released.

"ET" was practically another "Star Wars" type audience response when it was released and even though it did have a wider release than Star Wars did at the start, most showings were completely sold out for the first couple of weeks. People who disliked science fiction/fantasy films still seem to give it a pass and love it. I never thought it was all that great myself.

I don't think the inflation adjusted comparisons really work beyond about a decade either way.

They were different eras.

Culture has changed, people have fallen in and out of love with cinema, streaming and the home movie market developed, the games industry developed, China went from nowhere to the second largest movie market in the world, etc.

Gone With The Wind was a monumental achievement but it's literally a different world today, I don't think it's comparable.

The comparisons with Avatar and Titanic are a little more relevant, and obviously to TFA is very relevant. At the end of the day though, it's not an easy apples vs apples comparison.

Endgame passes Titanic

The Marvel title now sits as the second-highest-grossing film of all time, only behind James Cameron's 'Avatar.'

Avengers: Endgame is now the second-highest-grossing film of all time with $2.189 billion.

It has surpassed James Cameron's Titanic (1997), which earned $2.187 billion (unadjusted for inflation). Endgame achieved the remarkable feat after collecting another $145.8 million domestically and $282.2 million overseas in its second weekend.

The top-grossing film of all time is Cameron's Avatar (2009), with $2.8 billion at the global box office

Avatar is next..

Well, to be fair, their only good film (Beyond) had beyond shitty advertising, so it's no surprise it wasn't well-received in the box office. ;)

Not that I think it would put up those kind of numbers if it had been properly advertised.

Beyond is inarguably awful, so we won't argue about it here.

Bottom Line: Disney (and its shareholders and CEO) win. Gotta love monopolies, eh?
If only there was some way we could avoid giving them money. Like not going to see their movies for example. Unfortunately that's not an option and we're all forced to give our hard earned money to Disney and watch their movies. I mean even if there was just one other movie company out there making movies we could see. But no it's all Disney.

It was fun, I've maybe seen it twice though. I certainly don't hate it though. You'd think that Cameron personally beat up everyone who hates it, I just don't get it or care to even listen to it. It mostly seems like sour grapes over it being successful instead of some other movie. Who cares?

He just hasn't got around to you yet. By the time he's finished beating you up you'll hate it too!

I suspect that the majority of the hate is a reaction (overreaction?) to just how successful it was for what was really a fairly mediocre movie. I don't think it was a bad movie and I certainly enjoyed it, but I think people would like the highest earning movie of all time (at least so far) to be more significant. Other than the technical aspects (it looked incredible) there wasn't a lot going for it.

Cameron is very technical director and he's managed to figure out how to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Beyond is the weakest of the trilogy imo. How anyone could think it's better than the 2009 film is... well... beyond me.

I do give it credit for finally doing a believable universal translator, though.
