The fact that the enemy fleet was defeated by playing Beastie Boys kind of makes me want to hang myself.

They were defeated by screwing with their communications, which is pretty much a time honoured sci-fi trope. The fact that people suddenly act like it's the dumbest idea ever conceived just because it involved a rock music montage is frankly bizarre.

It's just that, you get rid of Abrams, you think you're getting rid of Beastie Boys in your Star Trek.

But nooooooooo.

Nah dude. That scene was badddd. Reallllllly badddddd.

I must be one of the few people who loved avatar. I just don't get the hate for it.

Mostly the excessive similarities to Pocahontas (and that others somehow didn't notice or were just willing to ignore that) and that Cameron was overly annoyingly preachy and, therefore, the story was too white hats vs. black hats.

This is also why Star Trek sucks (it's Wagon Train in space), Star Wars sucks (it's The Hidden Fortress in space) and Pocahontas sucks just as muh as Avatar (it's Lawrence of Arabia or Dances with Wolves, but worse because it's not even in space!)

Why is Pocahontas on such a high pedestal, anyways? It's probably not even in anybody's top 10 Disney animated movies.

It's not about whether it made sense, it's whether it stylistically fits Star Trek. Clashing styles has been an ongoing issue with Kelvin (and Discovery).

Pop culture references are best left to The Orville (like when they worked in Dolly Parton 9-to-5).

Naaaah duuude. It, like, totally was fine.

Agreed. Orville is a unique blend of being its own thing of action adventure drama, indirect homage, and 4th wall comedy with the usage of other pop culture.

Shorts ride up with wear? I shouldn't be getting this excited.

One dimensional sledgehammering that misses the trees for the forest if not the forest for the trees. Way too many plot holes that just cannot be overlooked. Way too flashy to distract since flashiness does not retain interest if there's no depth to accompany the flash. Arguably hypocritical. At least they were trying for something innovative but Cameron's track record should have had a bit more depth to the movie's tone and content. It simply has not aged well and the same trope has been told better lots of times, relying on a more balanced presentation and not teetering entirely on the side of pretty f/x puking across the screen.

I think a big reason why Avatar has lost its relevance is that society has largely abandoned any concern for the environment and the left has shifted its focus to identity-politics. I mean, a lot of the kind of heavy-handedness in Avatar in rendering simple black and white hats is no different from the same sorts of thing in, let's say, Shape of Water. Stephen Lang and Michael Shannon are very similar cardboard bad guy cliches, but Shape of Water gets lavished with awards. I find this rather sad considering how much the environment has degraded in the last 10 years. You can't have social justice on a dead planet.

It stylistically fits the Kelvin movies just fine. I agree, they're not exactly the same style as other Star Trek and anyone who doesn't like them for that reason is totally understandable, but that doesn't make Beyond a terrible film for using a rock montage. It's no less Star Trek-ish than any other kelvin movie, so if you can't stand Beyond for that then the trilogy just isn't up your alley anyway.

And yet... It thoroughly entertained me and still does when I rewatch it.

I could see someone resenting Star Wars for being too The Hidden Fortress-but with it both Lucas and, after they've seen it later, the fans willingly admit it's very derived from it (though mostly just the uses of the droids). I don't see how Pocahontas was particularly similar to either of those (though it was to other Disney films) while Avatar seemed to too often be almost beat for beat redoing its scenes, individually and as a whole.

Why is Pocahontas on such a high pedestal, anyways? It's probably not even in anybody's top 10 Disney animated movies.

Far from the very best (largely because it was itself too formulaic) but definitely widely seen.

All three of the Kelvin movies are some of my favorite Trek movies, with Beyond my favorite of the three.
I loved the Beastie Boys scene.
