JJ's era and excess if not unfair blame on Rian Johnson

Yeah, Solo wasn't a movie that needed to be made. But it was a fun ride.

Agree. I don't see the necessity of explain every single detail in the SW universe, with Solo they went too far. They could explore something different and not related with the characters that we already know. Maybe the Rian Johnson trilogy will be about something completely different. After ep.IX, this trilogy is what I'm more excited for.

I don't know, it reminded me of one of those one-off EU novels. They didn't add much, but they weren't a waste of time.

Almost no chance of that trilogy happening.

They even mentioned it was still happening at SWCC. Based on a recent interview, Johnson is finishing a crime film he’s been working on and when it’s done will go start work on his Star Wars trilogy. It may be the same project the writers for Game of Thrones have talked about. It’s set in the Old Republic era.

It being canceled is a sad fantasy. One I can’t wait to see shattered.

It's not happening. It'll be a loooooong time until we see star wars on the big screen again. Disney's plan was to milk the franchise until diminishing returns begin to be apparent. Unfortunately that happened way earlier than anyone expected.

A source would be nice for such a thing. And angry fanboy YouTube videos do not count. :p

I do believe we’re getting a few years off from Star Wars on the big screen post-TRoS, but i don’t believe the break will be, um, “loooooong.” The Johnson and GoT guys series are still in the wings with nothing being announced otherwise. But one failure (in Solo NOT TLJ) does not indicate a huge feeling of dread on Disney’s part. Despite what some fans might believe.

I think the initial plan was very ambitious. Scaling it back to a movie every few years isn’t a bad thing. It gives them a little time to breathe.

The sequel trilogy already had some pre-production started when Disney took over. Giving Johnson some time to start from scratch will take a bit. If it was canceled we would’ve heard about it, like that Boba Fett movie. But Lucasfilm has been consistent in saying it was coming, the haters just don’t want it to be and just keep insisting they’re right without any proof.

But I do have proof.
Star Wars fans have made the latest trilogy in the beloved sci-fi saga a living hell, to say the least. Between racist attacks and toxic fandom, the conversation surrounding the latest three movies in the Star Wars franchise has become a disease. Having endured the last four years of Star Wars trolls, it's time to prepare for whatever fresh hell awaits us next. And this week we got a little look into that future.

Much of the debate about Star Wars the last few years has been about Rian Johnson's second entry into the new trilogy, The Last Jedi. If you ask critics, the movie was a triumph, a much needed leap in the storytelling we typically get from Star Wars films. Depending what fans you ask, it either "supported a white genocide" or it simply destroyed their childhood and everything they hold dear. Throughout it all, Johnson has spent an entire year fighting with fans online—whom he calls "manbabies"—and defending his film from trolls.

Despite the toxic fans, Disney has entrusted Rian Johnson with the next era of Star Wars—with an entirely new trilogy that "is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga" and "will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored."

Unfortunately, even though that new trilogy is years away, Johnson is already fighting with the toxic Star Wars fans.

Earlier this week, a now-deleted post on something called Super Bro Movies dot com claimed that Johnson had walked away from the planned trilogy. Fan sites that have been critical of Johnson gleefully jumped all over the news, hinting that he'd quit the trilogy because of fan outrage.

Johnson then took to Twitter to dispel these rumors.

"No it isn’t true, I’m still working on the trilogy. With all due respect to the movie bros, who I’m sure are lovely kind bros with good fraternal intentions," he said in response to an article claiming he'd stepped away from the trilogy.

This is just a tease of what's to come from the next trilogy in this franchise. Johnson is currently in post-production for his next film, Knives Out, a crime movie with an impressive cast that includes Daniel Craig and Chris Evans. Star Wars IX isn't due out until the end of this year, yet we're already dealing with controversy for the next movie. Star Wars fandom has evolved into an ugly bizarre thing where fans will stop at nothing to kill the thing they love. Thankfully, Johnson is not dissuaded.

More proof.

It’s the end of an era — and a saga. As the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker promises, the Dec. 20 movie will bring a piece of cinema history to a close, and according to Lucasfilm's president Kathleen Kennedy, that’s been the plan all along.

“We knew we were going to close this up, we knew that even before we started The Force Awakens,” Kennedy told The Hollywood Reporter on Friday at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has spoken about Episode IX being the final Star Wars film for some time while the company focuses on small-screen efforts The Mandalorian, from Jon Favreau, as well as an untitled Rogue One prequel starring Diego Luna. But Kennedy is already planning plenty of big-screen adventures to come.

"We are looking at the next saga. We are not just looking at another trilogy, we're really looking at the next 10 years or more," Kennedy said.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer-director Rian Johnson is developing a trilogy of films, while Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are crafting their own trilogy.

“This [movie] is the culmination of the Skywalker Saga; it’s by no means the culmination of Star Wars," said Kennedy. "I’m sitting down now with Dan Weiss and David Benioff...and Rian Johnson. We’re all sitting down to talk about, where do we go next? We’ve all had conversations about what the possibilities might be, but now we’re locking it down."

This summit is on the calendar for next month, Kennedy said.

Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams came into the project after the September 2017 exitof Colin Trevorrow, and for him it was a chance to complete the journey he started with 2015's The Force Awakens.

“When Kathy called and asked if I’d be interested in coming aboard this movie, I was surprised by how emotional I felt about it,” Abrams told THR. “I didn’t expect to feel the way I did, and the opportunity to finish the story we started was something I couldn’t resist.”

The Rise of Skywalker isn’t just the end of the story started in The Force Awakens; it’s also the end of the nine-movie cycle started with 1977’s original movie. Abrams described trying to tie everything together as “this crazy challenge,” but believes that the movie will satisfy the demands placed upon it.

“The beauty of working with [co-writer] Chris Terrio and producing with Kathleen Kennedy is that I think we have found a way — I hope, it’s up for you to decide — to bring this story to a conclusion in a way that feels satisfying, surprising, amusing, shocking, all the ways that a story should make you feel. Mostly, it’s an adventure story about this new generation of characters who have inherited all sorts of things from those who come before. That was, in a way, how I felt about working on this movie.”

Everyone involved with the movie was staying tight-lipped about any potential plot spoilers for the none-more-secretive movie, but a running theme in talking to the cast was the sense of responsibility and community the final installment brought.

“I’m very proud of the story that J.J. put together, and I’m very proud of the performances,” John Boyega said. “It’s all of us together, and for me, that was enough.” Daisy Ridley added, “I felt a lot of emotion because I was so happy with what we were doing, I was so happy with the people I was working with, the cast and crew was amazing. All of the other stuff sort of falls to the wayside. You’re just trying to do the right thing [for the movie]; that’s all you can do.”

Ridley also sidestepped any question about the title’s meaning with regard to Rey’s parentage by talking about how new the title actually is. “I only learned the title last week,” she said. “I’m still processing.” Boyega, she added, only learned the title "last night."

Naomi Ackie, who plays new character Jana, said that her experience on the movie included “a lot of quiet moments sitting very quietly on the carpet floor saying, ‘I just need a second to get over this.’ It can be quite overwhelming, but this experience has been, and continues to be, so positive. It’s helped me grow as a person, to be honest.”

Also positive was the standing ovation Kelly Marie Tran received at the Star Wars: Episode IXpanel, coming after she had temporarily stepped away from social media after being targeted by trolls. “I was so emotional,” she said. “I definitely did not expect it, and I was all, ‘I’m not prepared! I’m not prepared!’ I was just trying to keep it all together.”

Tran was one of the few castmembers willing to entertain the possibility of appearing in a future Star Wars project, saying, “I love what Rian [Johnson] did, I love what J.J.’s doing, and I love that I’ve had the chance to be a part of it. I would never put an X on anything.” Boyega, on the other hand, said that he was “absolutely” ready to step away from Finn for the time being, explaining that the Rise of Skywalker shoot “gave me all the pleasure I needed, all the closure I needed” after spending years with the character.

If you are ok with "a few years" being 10 to 15 years, then everything is fine...

Because Kennedy, the President of Lucasfilm, is just saying we won’t have movies in 2020 and 2021. A bit shorter than a decade from now.

The source is my brain and it's ability to read between the lines. Disney has left clues to this decision all over the place.
My source is the people actually making the movies. I think they know a bit more than your brain.

Don't be DigificWriter. These people are paid to lie to us. Nothing they say has any meaning whatsoever.

So everyone else is lying, but we should trust you?

It’s not like Disney has stockholders they have to answer to and them lying about a property they bought for billions and then spent about a billion to build two of the most detailed theme parks in history with plans to expand them to their other parks which would be threatened by no future projects to keep up interest, guests and profits. Yeah, this is totally legit and reasonable.

Sadly most conspiracy theories centered around entertainment franchises seem to forget that the companies producing these franchises have a larger fiduciary responsibility above those conspiracy theorists.

There is no conspiracy. Shareholders are smart. They also know how to read between the lines.

I’m aware of that, but that doesn’t mean I trust your judgment. Especially when I have no reason to or any solid evidence to back you up and you’ve made it clear you’re only focused on finding flaws. That shows you have a clear bias and may be seeing things that aren’t there.

I'll be watching Rian's movies on opening weekend if I am wrong, so I pretty much hope I am wrong :)
