2 Shore Leave Questions

Methuselah Flint

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Was watching this episode today.

2 quick questions...

1) How did Sulu know Spock was beaming down from the bridge?

2) What episode is the sombre music sourced from the opening of Act III? It doesn't sound in keeping with the style of the rest of the partial score created for the episode.

Thanks!

I just take that as a misstatement for "from the ship."

It's from Sol Kaplan's score to "The Enemy Within," although I don't know the exact cue off the top of my head.

Yeah, "beaming down from the bridge" is a dumb line.
Attention, those in the "Least Discussed" thread: THIS IS DISCUSSION of Shore Leave! Thanks. :D;)

Biggest question for me is how the f--- does McCoy think he's got a chance with that Yeoman ?

It was the period. In 1966, Hollywood thought nothing of pairing Don Knotts with smokin' hot Joan Staley for The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. The man didn't have to be as attractive as the woman back then, because it was a man's world. Most characters were male. They were the protagonists and main audience representatives.

On top of that, it was understood back then that women needed husbands so they could have children and be supported, and thus women simply could not be as choosy about male appearance as they are today.

Yes, it is. It would make sense for Sulu to point out that a high-ranking bridge officer is beaming down, as opposed to one of those actually scheduled to have shore leave - but he is not entitled to that information, as he only has his eyes to refer to for the beamee's identity. And if he can see it's bridge folks, the "somebody" part doesn't make sense.

But Sulu saying it makes good sense anyway. What sort of a shore leave paradise would this planet be if it didn't get you drunk as a skunk, too? Obviously all our characters are inhaling enjoyment-enhancing chemicals, which explains not only why they do uttery silly things and shrug off minor setbacks such as McCoy dying, but also why they flub their lines!

In that case, I wish it was 1966 again, then I could try my luck with any available hot chica

I thought maybe it was because some people weren't so shallow and looks were not the definitive thing about a person, but maybe you're right.

Ha. Biology. Older males are.more established with access to resources to shower on the woman's offspring making them fitter in turn, oh ... wait ... no money in that society, re sources meaningless ... I guess it's the Southern charm and cute grin?

Biggest penis in the Alpha Quadrant? :shifty:

Age is an illusion! Back in the Victorian days, men always took a younger wife so that they could have their sons carry on their businesses after their deaths and leave their fortune to their spouses and his children! Nowadays an older guy will just leave her his debts!:wah::p

About 15 years ago I was doing a Star Trek role playing game with a number of friends. We were set in the movie era, somewhere around TUC, IIRC. I wanted my character to have a connection to a TOS era character, so I created Dr. Timothy Barrows, a nephew of Tonia Barrows who McCoy acted as a mentor to. I went online to do some research on what else had been done with Tonia Barrows in the novels and comics, because I wanted to be consistent with it if possible. One of the things I found was a long S&M themed slash fiction story that... "detailed" Barrows and McCoy's sexual relationship. It was profoundly weird to me that someone out there was getting off on speculation about DeForest Kelly's genitalia.

It's really depressing seeing this discussion of McCoy/Barrows. How about, these are three dimensional, adult characters who aren't models just looking for other pretty people. It was a more adult era.
--------------
McCoy gets a lot of female fan attention. When we were kids watching, first run, my sister liked that relationship, and had her own McCoy thing. The writing and acting make it make sense between the two of them. McCoy, hardly ugly, a lot more youthful in attitude than age... it can't have totally changed that women place less emphasis on the other's looks than men do.
--------
Men will often blame it on looks when things don't work out, when it was personality.
