The bridge looks a lot better in BTS shots IMO

It's that swarm of people filling all that pointless empty space.

I wish the steps leading down to the lower level didn't have lights in them. That's really annoying. And the deckplates are way too shiny. But overall that shot looks beautiful and you can definitely get a TOS feel from that set.

funny, i was looking at the set photos vs the aired episode and thinking the opposite:

i know it's not a cheap set, but the color grading (to me) makes it look more impressive and less... well kind of cheap in the set photos.

The steps, in isolation, don’t bother me that much — I can see lighting there being useful for fall prevention, especially with that shiny black floor. But the overall amount of neon is too much for me, what with the railing lights, the floor lights, the captain’s chair lights and the lighted trim around the turbolift door. (I find the door trim especially weird, considering they added it on *top* of the TOS grating light. Pick a focal point and go with it.)

I agree about the shininess issue. With that and all the neon, the effect is too slick. But if that’s my worst complaint, they’ve done a good job.

Seeing them side by side, I definitely prefer the warm, natural colors of the BTS shot. It still looks great either way though.

I do think the set would have benefited from the extra stations added for the Kelvinverse Enterprise.

But then it wouldn't have been as authentic TOS as they wanted.

I get what you're saying, but I strongly disagree. To me, it's like putting costume jewelry on top of a Vera Wang. The Vera Wang looked expensive and impressive as all get out, and the shiny fake nonsense only makes it look busier and makes you second guess if it even is a Vera Wang underneath.

But bathing everything in blue is DSC's MO, so it is what it is.

The warmer, more natural colours look much better. They go well with the red accents and the golden uniforms. Blue really doesn't.

It kind of makes the red alert light on the helm console sort of pointless as an eye-grabber when almost every exposed surface on the bridge lights up red when the ship is at Red Alert. I mean...come on. Tone down on putting lights in everything and bathing everything in blue.

I like this bridge a lot but sheesh, aspects of the DSC design aesthetic are just ridiculous and pure overkill.

And you know they know better. Remember how dark they made Enterprise-D bridge for Generations? Because the lit up bridge worked for a small screen TV show, but really didn't work a large HD movie theater screen? It didn't really work with E-D bridge so they blew up the ship and replaced it with more movie theater friendly E-E. Well I guess they forgot some of those lessons.

Not sure if this was mentioned earlier, but it seems they trolled Pike's infamous "Women on the bridge" remark by putting more women than men on his bridge!

They'll definitely re-use that set. 100%. Just - if the Pike-show doesn't come together - be prepared it's going to be the bridge of a 29th century Pakled-vessel in the 3rd season or something.

But stuff like that doesn't go to waste. Neither did the Shenzhou bridge (served nicely as the S31-vessel), or the Klingon Sarcophagus ship (which has been cannibalized and pieces appearing in literally every alien set). You'll get to see this bridge, or at least the individual elements, a whole lot more. They might just wear a new set of paint.

I thought maybe the theater was just really dark.

Other times in the movie, it was all sunlight, and looked like the characters were almost tanning right on camera. It was really dark or awkwardly bright, one or the other.
