It's not an "excuse" when it's actually part of the charm of a 50 year old IP.Just like technobabble, just because Trek has done it before isn't an excuse to do it again.
It's like complaining that warp speed gets us to the edge of the galaxy and back in a single episode way too fast. Speed of plot from the very first official episode of the very first season of the very first series. It's not an "excuse" when it's actually part of the charm of a 50 year old IP.
It's probably not ever going to go away and at this point is going to be used in any future Trek show that comes along.
Sometimes one just has to accept the inevitable and either look the other way or take it for what it is an enjoy it.

Best part of the episode is Pike acknowledging that that he knows MU exists![]()
That turbolift interior.
Yes sir
That is correct.
Spends an hr watching a show that is 4/10. Some people have too much time to waste. I would just turn it off. You're predictable![]()

Well I can’t very well give this more than a 4, at best it filler episode, at worst it’s much a do about nothing. So yeah call me predictable, but outside of few cool shots of the Enterprise what was really good here to warrant a 9 or 10 that most fans will end up giving this episode?
Hmm...I always kind of snicker about how Cornwell just randomly shows up every now and then.
Only on the Discoprise. Everyone else uses them.No more holographic communications ever again...except for when we try it again in DS9 season 5 for two episodes but then never again!
