General Computer Thread

I've still had the YT problem occasionally, but less frequently. I've noticed it seems like when a skip does occur, the quality drops one level. Not sure why. :p

Does anyone have familiarity with StackPath? I've noticed today that while browsing I site I sometimes frequent (Listal), I'll get a prompt to verify I'm not a bot or something similar. Even if that's completed correctly, it doesn't seem to take long before I get another message blocking me from viewing stuff on the site, even though I've never had such an issue before and it's not too unlike a website like DeviantArt (where the bulk of the content is pictures or similar media). But I could be on the site for an hour or more with zero problems whatsoever, and as mentioned this is an entirely new message.

I can't imagine what I could be doing that would cause this, and I haven't noticed anything else odd. But it's rather annoying and any advice would be welcome.

Edited to add: It looks like the StackPath is causing other issues on Listal too, and has only seemed to become a problem recently. But it's not just me and it doesn't seem to be anything on my end, that I know of... I suppose that's a plus.
Been running into skipping issues on YT as well lately for some reason.

Once I noticed that in my case it seems tied into the quality setting, it seems like switching it back to the proper level seems to clear it up. Weird.

Gotta hate Microcrap.

Right now Windows 10 is Microsoft’s latest operating system, but we imagine that there are probably quite a number of users out there who might still be on older platforms, such as Windows 7 or Windows 8. For those who are still using Windows 7, Microsoft is now starting to remind users that it’s time to upgrade.

The company has recently pushed out an update to Windows 7 where it appears that they will start to actively remind users that support for Windows 7 will be ending. According to Microsoft, “After 10 years of servicing, January 14, 2020, is the last day Microsoft will offer security updates for computers running Windows 7 SP1. This update enables reminders about Windows 7 end of support.”

To Microsoft’s credit, the company has warned that support for Windows 7 will be coming to an end, but we suppose actively reminding users when it will end will hopefully encourage users to upgrade to the latest version. While Windows 7 will continue to be functional and usable after January 14, 2020, don’t expect the company to update it any further which includes security updates that will keep your computer safe from malware and exploits.

That being said, Microsoft has stated that they will extend support to 2023 for users who need it, such as companies who might still be using systems that still rely on Windows 7. However users who need extended support will have to pay for it.

I'd take 7 over 10 any day, myself.

I still have Win7 machines, when the time is there I'll just disconnect them from the internet and that is all, some I might re-install, of course that will mean Linux instead of Windows.
Not going to install 10 on any of my machines one exception being my game machine but even that might be solved by then, I've got until 2023 when Windows 8.1's days are done.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I am a huge PC nerd. I love playing games on them, but as time has gone by I end up spending more time just goofing off on forums.

Wife, son, and I used to play WoW. Wife still plays FFXIV. I mostly have been just playing the Division 2 lately.

Here are the systems in my household that I've assembled myself:

I have an old Core 2 Quad Q9450 w/4GB of RAM sitting around....i wonder what use I can put it to. It has nothing else (just the cpu/mobo/ram). I think it's a P45 board?

Worth buy some small things like drives, PSU, and case?

Hell, i don't think it has integrated graphics either so it would need a GPU of some sort.

Retrogaming, I've got many older machines, two of them are Q6600's also have AMD Athlon64 x2 and socket 939 Athlon 64's, some of them run Linux and can be used as a desktop/backup machine, some of them have XP on them and they're used to make sure I can use older software and maybe an older game.

Have you watched Phil's Computer Lab YouTube channel?

I find that one pretty interesting. I think when I was using this system, I had some sort of Radeon 19xx?

Haven't watched Phil's Computer Lab, I use Youtube mainly for music, one of my Q6600's has a Radeon 5770, the other one is a Dell T3400 which used to have a Nvidia quadro but I've changed that for a Geforce 315 OEM both run Windows 7 btw.

X1900 could be, the card is from late 2006, Q9450's appeared in 2008

A general purpose computer might be defined as the computer which can be made use of for performing the very daily life tasks which might include emailing, browsing, media sharing, entertainment (apental), playing light games may be, editing some word documents/other documents, storing your media content and the like.

Only a server, embedded system or supercomputer isn't general purpose, my gaming rig is just as much a general purposemachine/ PC as a office rig.

so depending on whether it can be a beowolf cluster or play Crisis :)

Yeah that is how you turn general purpose hardware into a less general purpose piece of equipment. ;)
Hardware wise a good way to cut costs, less efficient though than specialised nodes like IBM builds for their clustered hardware..

Can someone tell me how to type subscripts in text? I have Windows 10 and run Chrome as my browser and I can find keyins for everything except subscripts.

Not a new thing at all, but I thought maybe someone here might know "what's the deal?", or at least encountered the same problem.

System: Win7 x64 on a Dell Latitude e6520. Intel Core i5-2520M quad core. Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB &16GB of RAM

This is most likely a Windows issue, but I have no idea why or how to fix outside of reinstalling Windows. All the files in the image I'm attaching were ripped straight from my blu-rays, one right after the other, same settings, etc.

The ones that have proper thumbnails play just fine in Windows Media Player upon being double clicked. The ones with generic .avi thumbnails do not run the video, only the audio (as appears in the WMP in the image). Other folders/seasons of different shows have similar issues, just with differing numbers of "unplayable" files.

This was not the case when they were first ripped. At that time, they all displayed the proper thumbnails and played fine.

Those odd ones play fine if I (right click) open them MP4 Player which came with my MP4 Downloader app.
