Not everyone is totally bad, there are 2 or 3 exceptions but the overwhelming majority of main (MAIN!) characters are either obnoxious or dull. It's hard to manage that even on a low budget so whoever is responsible for casting is just bad at their job.
Who was it? Have they casted before? If they casted before was it done well? Are there examples of them casting something in a good way? Because if there is, I don't know what happened now.
Other way round for me.The only character that really annoys me is Tilly. Even Burnham, who definitely has her faults, isn’t so bad. Everyone else seems ok.

My feelings on the main cast this season, ranked from best to worst:
- Doug Jones: Amazing, even last season when he was mostly just given pedestrian "XO" dialogue. I know he's used to working with makeup, but it's amazing the performances he can give considering he wears a rubber mask.
- Anson Mount: Just has the Pike character down cold. Conveys authority in his role, but still kinda comes across as having a "cool dad" vibe. Still not as good of an actor as Isaacs, but maybe that's for the best, because he outshone SMG so much in all their scenes together.
- Wilson Cruz: I think he's part of the main cast now, and based upon his performance in the episode before last, he's capable of depths in his performance that I haven't seen to date.
- Anthony Rapp: Finally getting some more interesting stuff to do this season after being woefully underused last season.
- SMG: Much better than last season, largely because the writing has improved. I do feel like she's doesn't have "larger than life" sort of acting persona that the best Trek leads (Shatner, Stewart, and Brooks) all had though. A better natural role for her is supporting.
- Mary Wiseman: I am enjoying her much less this season than last. Don't get me wrong, I think she's a fine actor, and many of the problems might be writing related. But this season it always seemed to me as if she randomly stumbled onto the set from another show for a scene of awkwardness and spouting some technobabble. Honestly if she were gone from the cast, I don't think the show would feel much different.
- Shazad Latif: He's put in a fantastic performance here and there this season, but I feel like he doesn't really elevate the material he's given much. Also a minor niggle, but it annoys me that either he or the showrunners decided he would have a bland North American accent, because he always sounds like he has a cold.
In The Cage, Pike's friend and confidante Dr. Boyce noticed that Pike was not acting like his usual self and that something was wearing heavily on Pike's mind. Pike confided that he was beating himself up over the recent deaths of three of his crew, and said that he was tired of being responsible for his crew and tired of deciding who lives and dies.I also like what I've seen of Pike thus far, even though he's not the hard ass he was in "The Cage" and perhaps they could've incorporated a bit more of that. But as for a generic starship captain guy, Discovery Pike was pretty cool and a nice contrast to Lorca.
Can't agree. For me Ash/Voq storyline was the most impressive in 1st season. It illustrated my own deep-hiding nightmares. Shazad Latif made his work good. The whole TyVoq thing was stupid as hell and badly executed.

Yep, pretty much. And if they wanted to do something interesting with the character, he should have become a real merger of the two personalities, instead of the Voq thing just being deleted and forgotten. There was an insanely stupid and convoluted backstory which ultimately resulted nothing.I think the problem with Tyler is the character and not the actor. Tyler is a mess of a character who never should've made it out of Season 1. The whole TyVoq thing was stupid as hell and badly executed.
Precisely so. I absolutely enjoyed Hunter's Pike but labored under no auspices that he would have remained that way had he been the series regular. In The Cage, Pike's friend and confidante Dr. Boyce noticed that Pike was not acting like his usual self and that something was wearing heavily on Pike's mind. Pike confided that he was beating himself up over the recent deaths of three of his crew, and said that he was tired of being responsible for his crew and tired of deciding who lives and dies.
So it seems that if Pike in The Cage was being a hard-ass, it plausibly was just a temporary thing that could be attributed to his state of mind at the time and was not one of his usual personality traits.
Other way round for me.
Tilly probably my favourite.
Even then it's not the actress that plays Michael that's the problem as she already has talent, just the writing.
