That would certainly be a good story reason to do it, further down the line. To see how different he was and how the crew coped with that reminder of their former captain who misled them.

Saru is my top pick right now, otherwise a different alien. I am curious about the captain that was waiting on Vulcan though....

I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't any thought put into the captain waiting on Vulcan at all. After all, the writers knew that Discovery was never going to get there and that Pike was going to be taking over the ship.

And Burnham just stopped by Vulcan without so much as a "How do you do". Poor Captain on Vulcan, doomed to wait forever for a ship that doesn't want them.

After tonight, I'm hoping Cornwell gets a Kirk-style demotion.

    Brook killed it.

After the recent episode 'Project Daedalus', I'm thinking .....

'Control' ends up becoming the AI on Discovery and is Spore Drive'd into the remote location and ordered to stay put, a la 'Calypso'.

All of the Discovery crew is transferred over to the Enterprise, taking her crew compliment from 210 up to 430. Our beloved Discover Crew is integrated in and ..... Season 3 is on the Enterprise captained by Pike!

    Win - win!

    ;)

I somehow think they'd have been reassigned by now. Starship captains don't seem like a commodity you just leave sitting around. Starfleet can assign Discovery another captain when needed - like maybe Number One. Although...

I was just looking at Memory Alpha's entry on Pike, and I know the OP said we're supposed to assume he's only here for a season, but I'm not sure that's a safe assumption - there's actually nothing that says he can't get promoted to Fleet Captain and remain on Discovery until his maiming aboard the training ship (which it isn't clear he was in command of). His command of Discovery wasn't mentioned in "The Menagerie" (for reasons obvious on a meta level) but that could be because the missions (and even the very existence?) of that ship were classified and wouldn't have been announced in court.

Well, Kirk has to be there when Pike is promoted to Fleet Captain. And also, when Pike hands over the Enterprise to him. Which may be two separate events.

How many people think this has already been decided? In other words will we clearly know who the captain is by the end of the season, or will it be open-ended again to allow the writers another year to decide where they want to take it?

I would imagine that another cliff-hanger is probably in the works.

They probably know the rough plan for Season 3 by now and who will sit in that chair.

But we won't know until next year.

Or it could be the same event, and Kirk is the captain waiting on Vulcan who *was* going to command Discovery, but is about to get handed Enterprise, instead, because Pike stays on Discovery?

It's 2258. It's way too early for Kirk to be given command of a starship.

I don't know. Didn't he start late but then make it through the Academy in 3 years? And I think he was made first officer on like his first day on a ship. So....
    (Yeah. I know. :ducks: :D )

Second day at least. On the first, he slept with an Admiral... obviously.

whoever they go with, unless its prime Lorca, acting-wise it's going to be very very difficult to replace Mount as Pike.I can't see a logical reason how they could run with Prime Lorca, but in terms of the show needing a good character in the chair, im not sure how they couldn't.

but I have wished out loud before, Shohreh Aghdashloo returning as Commodore Paris. She most certainly could move the show forward and would be a fantastic addition. But I'm not sure how committed she is to The Expanse after Season 4.
