It's obviously not a prequel. It's an alternative timeline where Annorax – determined to stop Janeway – deflected comets near all the non-Earth Federation planets, preventing/altering abiogenesis like Picard did in All Good Things. This led to the formation of an entirely new alpha quadrant in terms of cosmic neighbours, delayed the establishment of the Federation, and Zefram Cochrane never flew his first warp engine because La Forge wasn't there to coerce him into doing it, and we saw the transporters get replaced by good exciting and daring storylines.

That would have to include the origin of the Borg....

Obviously, the people who experimented with cybernetic implants to accidentally turn themselves into the Borg, were pushed by Annorax to know better and they created the Kaylons instead.

IDK - It would be hilarious if "Star Trek" (the show and it's various spin offs) actually did exist in "The Orville"'s universe in the 20th and 21st century; but alas it seems only FOX related shows/films like "Planet of the Apes" and "Alien Nation" and "Predator" exist.

I see the plot coming fro ma mile away. The only thing I don't know: Will this be like Finn and Isaac, where in the end they are a couple? I can imagine a season three joke:

Ed: "No, you'll fit right; we all have weird love lives. One of our Engineering staff is a pile of Jell-O that is sexually attracted to a human female. Said human female is in a serious relationship with a robit that tried to exterminate of her race, and our helmsman is dating a hologram. Oh, and I dated a woman who turned out to be a Krill operative."

Yet somehow is still more thoughtful and challenging than Trek produced in the 21st century.
